Plus one on the p.pro. you will feel everything that goes on down there. Its alot easier to detect a bite with braided line than mono. The braid is alot better for hooks sets when you are fishing deep water. There is no stretch in the line. You will catch alot more fish.
As far as a rod and reel goes i dont have a specific answer for ya. This may help though. Get a longer rod 7'ish. This will help with your hook sets. Stay away from too light of a rod. You gonna want a little back to it. As far as the reel goes just get something with a fast ratio,. The faster the ratio the better your chances are of giving those cute little perch the benz.......ha! I love it when their airblatter is blowing out of their gills and mouth.

We use 7' Ugly Stick Lite (medium) and 8# Power Pro with a Mitchell 308xe spinning reel.
It is sensitive enough for the Perch, yet has the poop to pull up the occasional Channel Cat or Smallie!

I Agree ..... medium action 7' ugly stick also with medium spinning reels,  6 lb diameter  20 lb test braid line like posted above you feel everything even the lightest of strikes and hook setting is easy it will outfish a rod with the old mono filament line. I have caught large muskie's,walleye on this also so it is very strong. Just be careful not to throw large spoons or spinners with the line mentioned or it will twist up and you are cutting line then.

i took a small bait casting reel last year to give it a try, and it is now pemenatly on my perch rod. it worked out very well. if you go on the head boats, i personally like a longer rod. it helps to get the feesh up over the side of the boat.

A baitcaster sounds like a good idea! I imagine one would be able lower your presentation down with some thumb control. Im gonna have to give it a shot.

I also use a baitcaster for perchin. more control, easier to feel when you hit bottom.

you have to lower the rig slowly til you feel it hit bottom?  most of the time you just open the bale and let the line fly off til it crashes to the bottom then start reeling and you already have a double before you get the slack out

All right, I know it's January and we have a few months until we get our boats out in the spring and we're all thinking about doing different things this year, but are y'all gettin goofy here, a little cabin fever maybe? This guys asking about perch fishing! Braided line? Baitcasters-to drop a 1/2 oz sinker over the side of your boat? Back bone to a perch rod? Buddy, if you're perch fishing off the side of a boat, a couple of 5 ft LT/Med LT ugly sticks with some low end spinning reels is all you need.  Been using the same rods and same mono for 5 years now. Have no plans on changing it. Thumb control on the bait casters? Yeah, if you're casting. I have 2 penn baitcasters and grew up on Shakespere knuckle busters, so I know of what I speak, I know how to control backlash. He's dropping it over the side of a boat. DO NOT BUY A BAIT CASTER UNLESS YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY COMMITTED TO LEARN HOW TO USE IT; TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH IT'S BRAKING SYSTEMS AND THE ROLL YOUR THUMB PLAYS.  BC or spinning, he's going to know when he hits bottom as soon as that sinker hits sand and he gets slack in his line. If you're going to be perch fishing off the piers or rocks, than yeah, a slightly heavier rod and line may be called for because you never know what you might get into. But don't overthink this, and definitely don't overspend! YOU'RE PERCH FISHING OFF A BOAT.

When I'm perchin and you are marking suspended fish I like to drop a heavy jig to the bottom and count the cranks back to the surface do a little math anti reverse your jig to the suspended fish with shiners or perch belly on the hook set the drag light put it in the rod holder and if there walleye down there you can bring them home with you.

I also have used a baitcaster once or twice but my question with them was the retrieve ratio.  To me it seemed it took much longer to reel a fish up than when I used my Shimano 4000 size spinning reel.

Has any one else noticed this or is it in my head.  I realize the gear ratios of all reels are different but in general are baitcasters slower?

I use a US large arbor to get them in quick from shore with a Okuma 9 foot Conterror or however you spell it. Also because braid freezes up 8 pound Trilene smooth casting strong enough to launch a 3 ounce sinker

BTW, you dont have to reel them up so dang fast. If you bring em up slow, you WONT give them the benz and the dinks will survive when you throw them back. I know, seagulls gotta eat too. Just something to ponder.

    +1

I too was a non believer... until I tried it

Same thing with the Sabiki rigs, until 6point7 tied one on my perch rod I would've never thought they could make much difference. Ya, I can catch them on crappie rigs or spreaders but not near the same rate as the Sabiki...

I use braid too in summer on the boat but during this time of year it freezes up. I have became a huge fan on the Grand Slam braid cheaper than most brands and yet it doesn't nick up as quick

How about using a subiki rig off of a rigger hooked right to the ball.

    Brilliant!

    I use 7' medium light action rods , 15lb fireline , at least a 5:1 ratio reel , usually a 1 to 2 oz sinker , and I tie my own rig.

rmcmillen I am going to try that next time out.

works especially when you are busy jerkin perch you got a walleye killer, scale the perch belly and remove a good size slender piece, doesn't come off when attacked by smaller fish.

A large sheephead or "thunderpumper" as we call them , are extremely fun on light action perch rig. If you want to almost guarantee a thunderpumper while perching , cast your line out from the boat and drag it in , good way to pick up sheepers that way. If their are a few around you can get one every cast.
