if you can make it down to VA by 9PM tonight, you're welcome to come with us, James.  Light tackle, 40 pound plus fish...  should be fun...

It's certainly a big ol pile of bruiser blue cats if that's the James. Only the elongated almost fish shaped blotches are the fish. Stacked like cordwood and some prolly pushing 100lb. From what I hear, you'll start to get bummed if you're only landing 30lbers.

I think he confused you, he was talking to me (my name is James).   Pretty sure he's going Striper fishing, (Chesepeak bay? can't remember). I guess we'll have to wait for the pictures to find out.

A little more about the fish finder image above.  That was actually taken in 30 feet of water.  There was a solid column of striped bass from top to bottom.
You could see them busting on  top and  going down as far down as you could see.  Which wasn't very far, because for the most part we were always
too busy fighting fish.  I have heard about the VA Beach winter striper fishing for years, and finally got a chance to give it a try.  It is everything folks
say it is and possibly more.
The fish were not as heavy as they are in spring.  Though we had a couple fish like this one that pushed 50 inches, that fish probably barely broke 40 pounds.
There were very few fish under 30 inches, and maybe a dozen or so over 40; avg weight was probably low 20lbs.  As to total numbers,  I'm still not sure I
believe them.  We were jigging with relatively light spinning tackle and 10 lb test line, and lets just say that once we got the jig to the bottom--if we got it to the bottom--there were very few casts where we were able to actually jig it more than a couple times without it getting slammed.  BTW--you could've fished many of these fish flies, which surprised me.  Wish I'd known.
Bonus:  seeing the wildlife.  Saw five whales, all humpbacks, probably 45 feet long or so, a couple right next to the boat.  Gannett birds concentrated like the fish, dive bombing in aerial dives in such numbers you wonder if you are safe!  Fish concentrations that would give a good hole full of steelhead in a banner year a run for its money.
Not the hardest fighting fish, but still a lot of fun.  Might be one of those trips you want to put on your bucket list; I'm glad I can now cross it off mine.

A quick word about the fishing rods in the pics before the comments start...
The point is to show that these fish are indeed caught on relatively light spinning tackle (10 lb test) rather than usual heavy trolling tackle spooled with 100 lb test (which hasn't even slowed down some of the bluefins the trollers have been hooking).  And, of course, both hands are busy holding fish!

Nice hogs. Congrats. Are you in the ocean or mouth of the bay? I did a charter where they worked the drop offs of the CBBT. Awesome fishery down there. Nowhere near the success you had though. Hopefully some of those are still hanging around the NJ surf... Will be giving it a shot next week. I'm doubting it, but have heard reports of smaller ones still around.

    Glad folks enjoyed the pics.
Porktown--we were a bit north and about 8 miles out, in Federal waters.  Not another boat around.  Once we got back close to the beach and not far from the harbor, we put out four rods for a single pass trolling.  We caught 6 fish, inc. two on one rod.  That was more than enough meat for the four of us.  Hope you find some stragglers!
Sorry about the confusion over names--yeah, I was referring to Stillhead.  And yep, James (Stillhead) you shoulda been there!  Next time.
    Haha Spoonie--I'll remember that!
