The river is awfully high right now. I'm sure that fish could be caught, though. Just driving by, it looks like most/all of the shoreline is flooded.

Not having a boat, I only fish it from shore.

That said, many people do fish it by boat. I think that the safety bouys are placed further away from the dam itself than at most places, because I have heard dozens of boats get yelled at over the bull horn by the authorities at the locks for getting to close. I never undestood why they want to get that close. It's not like you have to fish under the dam to catch fish. This time of year, many boats fish the empty marina area because there are no boats docked there. Must be catching something, because I always see boats fishing there.

It does not exist . . . it is only a figment of your imagination.

IMO, the river level is nearly ideal right now.  I should also mention that this time of the year can be hit or miss more so than any other time of year.  I wouldn't set your expectations too high if driving 1.5 hours or else you will probably leave disappointed.

I was wading in the Allegheny yesterday. Fine in spots, ripping in others. Fish at dusk and dawn.

The fishing could be fine right now, it's just that where I would usually wade/shore fish is not accessable.

Dam #1 on the Allegheny. I haven't been there for 10 years. We would use mechanical counters and log in #'s of fish caught. This time of year it wasn't unusual to have 150 sauger each fishing from a boat. Like many fish, sauger #'s are cyclic.

Plenty of space, come on down.
Good bunch of people there, and very friendly!

Don't cast out too far as the fish at this time of year are close to shore.
Creek chubs are the best bait for the beg eyes. You can get them in the local creeks.
There is a method though, don't pull on the first hit, wait until the eye takes the bate on the second hit.  The first hit is the eye stunning the bait.

Hope this helps.

Fish on!

No joke here.

When the ice clears, try the 13st boat launch in Sharpsburg.
Head toward the river through the tunnel once you hit 13th street.
Access is easy, only problem is once you have a fish on, there is a wall and rocks to contend with.
If you walk up river, fishing can be done easily from shore.
Give it a try.

Yes, fish off the parking lot at 13th street. HUGE walleyes, sauger, saug-eye, musky, pike, trout, bass, pike, catfish, crappie, bluegills, gar, tarpon, snook, pompano, snapper, grouper, sea trout, croaker, barracuda, amberjack, drum, sting rays, sharks, etc etc etc  - yes, GREAT fishing at 13th Street. No need to go anywhere else. Really.

Hope you're never fishing next to me or my friends.
I wouldn't want any of your anger to rub off on me!

To everyone else, stop by, chat, share my bait and technique (if it's working).

The more nasty posts, the more responses he gets, and ultimately he gets what he wants, either attention or a thread removed that he feels threatens his fishing privacy, or some other strange reason, who knows.  The last HPD thread was removed and if folks continue to respond to trolling or flaming the same will happen to every thread people acknowledge him on.
Ignore rantings or obvious mis-information posts and just continue to put helpful posts for fishing techniques and directions to legally access any public body of water someone wants to discuss.  There are a lot of excellent fishermen here with a wealth of info they are willing to share, don't let the other types control the direction of discussions.

Dispite his ranting (manliketofish) is in the same boat as me I have quite a few honey holes I choose not to disclose because I don't want yahoo's to throw their gabage all over the place and invite their whole net work of friends to do the same I'm sure he's a very open wealth of knowledge behind the sarcasm but the problem he is sayin is the same I see.

its soo simple...if someone asks for directions to a place like HPD or anywhere else that may be at risk for high traffic, PRIVATE MESSAGE THEM with the directions...don't post it for all the turds on this site to see just because you wanna be the "know-it-all" guy. These are the same guys that will be complaining a few years from now about "how the fishing isn't the same" and "god **** spotburners" and "too many people not enough room" blah blah blah...

Some folks need to be a bit more vague on reports/directions.

Some folks need to be a bit more respectful of others.

Insult the wrong person (people) on these forums, show where your favorite fishing spot is, expect specific info to crowd you out.

All advertisement is good advertisement.  Keep bumping the thread and expect others to be interested.

I'm really not that upset over it...just sick of hearing about it over and over again when there is such an easy solution. Like nonkosher said, its about population control and nothing else. I've been a member on this site for 7 years now and this topic is one of the more prominent ones that routinely pops up on almost a daily basis.  What DOES bother me are the people who maliciously spot burn just to **** people off or get under their skin...I really hope these aren't grown men that are doing this...

On a better topic my buddy and I have been throwin ideas to see if steelhead propagating on their own. But then they should close one. Creek a year to conventional fishermen leave the other open and that one creek for fly fishing only.

I know this is an old post but I hate when people act like the own a section of river. Our waterways are for everyone to share. When I go to fish a known spot, If it is crowded, I don't squeeze myself in though. I will move down river or shore and look for another spot. That is actually how I found some nice holes and caught a lot of fish. That's why I'd like to have a boat that way I am not in amongst the crowd.
