Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

Finally found the magic fly. Took alot of research and development, but after removing 4 or 5 similar "flies " out of the sides of steelhead that had broke off with them (I think that's called sidemouthing them.) , I decided to perfect my own. I may have to check its legality in the fly zones. It works well  fished with weight, not quite as good under a float. Might  have to work on the  color combination. I think it resembles a caddis of some kind.

I'll have to downsize 2 hook sizes , Wader. Hope I can still see them to tie them on.
Hopefully the swap flies will lead people to do this:

LMAO

the magic glove..

I imagine a person has to somewhat fumble around trying to get that thing on your hand whilst simultaneously holding the rod keeping pressure on the fish, yada, yada.

I guess if you use a net first, then you can liesurely don the glove.

Without a net, I would beach the sucker in shallow water, dehook, and decide whether to push back into current or pic it.

Are you a netguy or a beachcombing multi-tasker?

Drake I had a mesh bag meant for camping that cost about 2 bucks that worked great. I thought I lost it, so I bought the expensive one. They do work. I keep it in my wading jacket pocket, and it's very easy to get at.  I don't get it out until the fish is either in the net or slid up on some shallow grass or sand. I do both, depending on where I am.  I'm not going to keep many, so I try not to F'em up too bad. Nancy and I have been doing this with fish all over hell and gone for decades; the fish ain't out too long. Most are still dripping when they go back in.  The ones that don't get pics- the glove helps to hold them while getting the hook out. I've got zip against keeping them, I just hate wasting good fish.

Almost done.  I did a bead head stone fly.   Been working  more than a few hours on them.  I will give a humble apology already to the quality.  They are decent, probably on par with some of the mass produced stuff I have seen in town, but not the greatest.

No apology needed, Clint. I'm sure their good and fishable. The only thing that you want to avoid is sloppily blocking the eye on the hook and making it hard to tie on with cold fingers. With a beadhead, that's about impossible, so  I guess you did well! I've been tying lots of stones lately, some realsitic, some not. I did add some wingcases ,antennae, split tails, formed the body with lead to create the correct flattened vee look of the natural ,and used vinyl rib to make a nice segmented abdomen,  but I stopped at tying knots in pheasant tail fibers or bending biots with a hot wire to make realstic legs. Too much work for too little payback. I know guys that insist they fish better. I have a different opinion and experience. Look forward to seeing and fishing one, Clint.

last time I did the hot wire trick I attached a blonde chunk of Lebanese to the end of it, very little work for one hell of a payback...

Since the weather is wet and dreary think I'll start on my flys for the swap.Took my Boxer,Molly, and a friends mixed breed for a long walk yesterday and I'm too tired to do anything more physical than sit and tie.

Not the worst way to pass some dreary weather.  I have 3 light sources over my tying area, so it's pretty well lit. It's kind of nice to have all the light when its dismal out. Look forward to seeing them, Jack. I'm tying up another set to throw in .

I know I do alot of things bass ackwards, but I've never had a fly turn out like that. Actually, I've tied some backwards and upside down dry flies. Fine with me, Drake . Whatever floats your taob. Looks like it would fish  fine. Having tied thousands with the forward wingcase, I'd have a hard time of it.  Thanks for the pic. In the spring, when I start fishing ponds for trout, that'd be ideal, as I use a 2 fly rig, with the point fly  on a dropper tied to the hook bend of the forward fly. No tail to tangle in.  I wish you could use 2 flies on the SR, I base alot of my nymph rigs on it. I used it on rivers in N. Ca.   I could use less weight.   I'm not out to snag

That does look mighty appetizing drake (unfortunately not as much as that kornakova pic you posted up ;)

Im going to have to try that one out because I am a firm believer in presentation and drifting that fly backwards in my opinion would be a DIFFERENT presentation than the norm...

Fichy, I agree with the allowance of 2 flies... sucks we can't do it.... there are some creative ways to do it with just having one hook...but it may not be worth the effort...

This is tied on the same hook as the red midge.
For many years I've chased stripers with my fly rod. I know we have some striper guys here.  This is my favorite herring pattern. It will work for pike, too. Maybe I'll have to throw my yak in the  SR estuary. It could pass for a stocked bow. I have tied some larger than this with some lavender and red added in for trophy largemouth fisherman in California. They get fat chowing on stockers. I've never thought to fish the Hudson much, even though I live an hour from the Troy Dam which  stripes  run to in the spring. I've never met anyone that could give me any info on fishing other than, in a  boat and using live bait up near the dam. That's changed.
Now, I can't wait for spring. Dropbacks, pike,  stripers closer to home....still some steel and pannies to go....

Hey charlie let me know about pike in the spring.... id love to join ya in my pontoon... I wanted to try it this past spring but never found the time...

Ps.... I know of some other spots that may produce better than the SR estuary as well... BTW; I've been told that it is later than most areas with the spawning for pike in the Ontario region... depending on ice out...

HT, scanned the creek on Google Earth. Looks PRIME. I spotted all kinds of spots, from bridge holes to channels to bars. NICE. Call you tomorrow night. I'm going  to run around  to check conditions, scope the parking on the lakes  out tomorrow afternoon.
Dime, most definately on pike!  Go with HT and his yak, too. Major blast.

Here's my other swap flies. The BJAC egg (ball juggling azz clown) and the Dawn's blue ball special nymph.
