The first official 2012 steelhead fly swap-a-palooza

Since we have some interest in fly tying, it would be a good thing to have a swap of flies. We're not talking fancyazz Atlantic  salmon stuff, just nymphs, eggs (might have to double them, though, if they are really simple) wooly buggers, worms, pupae  or whatever you think a steel may take. We'll sign-up , I'll explain how to ship them and everyone in the end will get a set of flies to try out on the river. If you don't tie, you are welcome to provide the number needed of your go to  fly and we'll count it just like you tied it yourself. Ain't gonna be too freakin' fussy or picky. I've run many of these puppies and they are generally a ton of fun. I usually learn something from them, and it's really cool to show a pic of a steel with a swap fly in its jaws. Depending on the number of participants it'll be 1 or 2 flies   to be supplied for each person. ie. 10 tyers= 10 or 20 flies Sign-up deadline is  1/16   I'll gladly answer any questions . The due date and number of flies we'll determine after we get the players set. I'm thinking 3/1 as a due date-least gives the flies a shot at steel this year. We'll go quicker if everyone agrees. Thanks in advance for playing.

Shipping the flies- Place your flies in a small container of some kind- chew can, altoids tin,  one of those small carboard jewelry boxes, hook box etc..., put it in a manilla (yellow) or padded envelope, put your return address on it so it will come back to you Stick it  unsealed , inside a larger envelope ,  and send to
Charlie Lapinski
145 East Main St.
Cambridge NY 12816

I'm not worried about outing my address- someone wants to visit, they'll either get a warm welcome or a gut full of shot...
If you want to put in a buck to help with postage ,fine, if not I'll cover it.
Flies will be due on 2/10. Try to post them a few days before that.  As soon as I have them all , you'll get them right back.  For those that haven't done these swaps- often a little toe  tag put on the hook is required to tell who tied what. F' that.  I'll take pics and put them on here to tell what was what. If you want to include a recipe, so others will know how to tie up your fly, I'll put it up with the pic.     9 or 18 flies due and you'll get a set of your own back. (Makes it easy to divide up the spoils)  Anymore questions will be addressed  in this initial  post and I will update it as neccasary.

1. Charlie- Czech/ caddis, purple stone- done
2. Drake-received
3. Tuna- streamer- IN
4. Clint  - received
5.Pafisher -received

We certainly have enough to go forward, thanks for the enthusiasm. Thanks to Drake for kickin' me in the azz to do it. We'll give it some more time to see if anyone else wants to join. If you wish to state what you want to tie, let me know, I'm still trying to decide, myself.  Tuna's  suggested deadline is a good one- 1 month out would give us plenty of  time  left in the season to get them hooked up.    If anyone needs more time, let me know.
If you wish to tie 2 flies, go ahead. If you're tying a streamer and feel one is enough that's good , too. I'll probably do a simple nymph and a larger offering.  All the swap info will be kept  in the first post in the thread.

KK. I will tie up some goodies.
Will do my Rycophilla Caddis with the nymph skin & Partridge & an orange and partridge with some Alec Jackson silk I've been saving for a special occasion.
Soft Hackles are the way in Winter/Spring fishing for Trouts of all types if you ask me.
I don't care if it be one or two flies per guy.
Will tie mine today. Last day of my long weekend and I will forget by next month....
Thanks for hosting f. PM me your addy.....

The SUK sucks anymore Slammo - catch up on your sleep - you ain't missin nuttin.

Fichy - if I can make one suggestion for fly swap - can we all tie up more flies than 2?

e.g. if we get 10 participants, each participant tie up 10 flies, then everyone gets one fly from each tier.
Send them to you with a dollar to cover your return postage & envelope overhead and we'll be good to go.

    just thinkin out loud.

Drake, the fly count is per participant- if we get 10 tyers you'll have to tie 10 or 20 flies . If it stays at 7 it'll be 7 or 14. You'll get one set  of your own back. I would like the flies sent with a Self Addressed envelope that fits around your container. (hook box, grizzly can, altoids tin etc...) You can't put flies directly in an envelope. Usually I 'd require the return postage covered by the envelope being postage paid (pre-stamped envelope) , but I'll let that slide. I guarentee I'll end up eating 10-20 bucks in postage.  I've run maybe 2 dozen swaps and many charity ties, there's a formula that works well, but I was trying to be a little loose with the rules. I'll explain everything in the first post. If there aren't rules, this'll go to hell quick.

Can you mail me a New Skete Cheesecake with the flies. For the uninitiated, those nuns make one of the best cheesecakes I have ever tasted.

If you're serious and actually join the swap, believe it or not, I'd actually do that. I avoid that cheesecake like the plague. It's like crack with a smooth texture. They have 12 step programs in this area for it.  I can't afford new sets of clothes as I blow up like a cheap tube to float down the Battenkill.   Are you in?

ah i just threw the rules thing out only because rules were made to be broken.. we folks here like to call things an understanding that way everyone understands clearly.. lol..

sure we (you) can keep one list.. i was just trying to make it simple by those that join to cut and past the already names then add theirs in their post, kinda like a running tab.. it just makes less for you to keep track..
All good though I completely understand and look forward to this..
I have done a bunch in the past and know the routine..

F dat - things get outta hand with a runnin tab - I gave up that practice after a long night in a bar - had to produce the pink slip to my car to cover.

Fichy - what kind of camera do you have? Photo quality = Extremely Good.

Drake, nothing special. I use to have Nikon bodies  with Nikkor macro lenses that would make that look like crap. It's an Olympus 790 WS. A little digital that I use  to take pics of fish (all I've posted here) and for work. It's got macro functions though, and with the right lighting ,angle, and using a tripod it does OK on flies. It sounds like alot of work, but having run the fly tying section of a flyfishing forum, I've got it down. I finished these scuds last night, including  a bunch for my box. I read another honest sounding report of success on a green fly, gotta go give it hell.  Could you send me a couple of crow feathers? I'll send a few flies back as payment.  Tail or wing, not fussy. I don't hunt them, so I rely on the very rare roadkill to get any. I'm out at the moment, and I feel deprived....Even if I did hunt them (layed out under white sheets in the snow with an owl and a call when I was  a kid) they're way too smart for me.....

    PM sent.

have you ever used porcupine hair?

reason I ask - I read somewhere that it is prized by fly tiers...

I might happen to have some of that too..:)

No, but it's prized for it's length for drake tails  antennae, legs  and such. Moose mane and Elk are pretty brittle and break off easy, porky hair is stiff, yet durable. Looks alot better than microfibbets or other fake material.
Expensive.  I don't tie a  tenth of what I use to, but send a few hairs if you got them and I'll find a use.

Well, I think I'll call it - we have 9 players. That means send in 9 or 18 flies for the swap. The shipping stuff is in the first post of the thread which I will continue to update. I will also mark which ones have been received  as we get them in. Happy tying!

At which point, the following prizes will be awarded:
1st prize- GPS co-ords and a map to Metal's favorite spots, including all small tribs. The first day  the winner tries them , he'll be their guide.
2nd prize- A 12 pack of their  choice,  from  which they can just  chuck the empties
behind them ,as Metal will have to pick up a 30 gallon bag of trash from whatever section of the river  they choose.
3rd prize- A ringside seat to watch Metal knock the hell out of me for awarding  prizes 1 and 2.

So here's a peeky peek at my Caddis thing. At least a prototype. Yeah- the throat fibers may be a tad long & the segmentation sucks, but i was just playing. I think I'll also coat with the Loon UV stuff. donno yet. The other will just be a soft hackle. Slayer- I'll tie send up a few. And BTW I found your stuff I was suppose to send way back..
