I must be getting old. I don't feel like running to the river this morning. I've fished in single digits, but below zero with any wind is too much for me. I'm sure there are some people out this morning. Variations are good Clint. Some will work better than others. I've caught small stream trout on this fly, I hope it will work well for steel. This is a good weekend for tying flies, rather than fishing them. Charlie

I don't even want to start the vehicle this morning - but now it warmed up to 10 deg. Drove through my first white-out of the year on the way home last night. We picked up about 4 inches from squall. First nitwit encounter of the year too - he just had to pass me by because he must have been impatient with me going 25mph. About 4 miles later, I saw him standing next to his big SUV in da ditch, waving a flashlight my way as I rolled by him at 22 mph. I didn't bother to stop - figured I'd return the favor since he basically tried to run me off the road earlier. I hope his cell phone battery died and he froze to death. Good day to tie flies for Fichy's swap.

We are still waiting up here, but this weekend sure helped. Oneida was skimmed about a week ago and then it was gone. Hopefully by next weekend there will be some ice. I am conservative, so I will probably let it get a good 6 inches plus before I go out.

So far the outings (5) I have had since 12-31 have been on 5>8" ice.. I'm not talking puddles but 300 acre lakes with the larger ones growing fast.. Now that the artic has set in below the blue line (adk's) I'm looking at hitting a private pond tomorrow well below Albany,NY.. Ice is here if you want it (or have the time).. Honestly, I'm not driving to the SR to fish when the fishing here is just as GOOD without a driftboat here, waiting to cast or getting to the "spot" at O' Dark Thirty.. It's Just logistics for me.. Have fun and keep posting Pic's of what I may be missing.. It really helps.. Really !!

HT - checked a small pond near my place today - first 10 feet of shore ice is barely an inch. Pretty surprising given the temps the past 2 days. 4in snow on thin ice will make for really crappy white ice after Tuesdays predicted rain then re-freeze. Like Clint - I am conservative with ice depths - might not drill a hole till Feb if the January patterns continue. but I got an inch to jig pannies whilst sittin on mah bucket.

Pa - he'd have to go north to Flagstaff, AZ - which on average, receives more snow than PA. Az has a few trout streams too - but not very many.

There's some decent lakes on the Mogollon Rim east and north of Show Low. Oak Creek by Sedona isn't bad and gorgeous scenery. Bass fishing ain't bad in some of the reservoirs, I did Ok in Apache Lake. Catfishing is very good, especially in the White River. I won't count Lee's Ferry, or canyon hikes like Bright Angel Creek. Too much driving and adventure trekking. The Colorado is fishable for warmwater over on the Ca. border. from Bullhead City down. Huge carp and stripers available in Havasu. At least that's what I found when I lived in Wickenburg. Personally, I think Prescott, which is up around 5,000 in elevation, is one of the best places to retire to in the US. Cool town and some fishing in lakes right around it. I only lived there for a year and have visted a number of times (I was there in August for a few days ) HT probably has a better handle on it than me. Pa, Im guessing Fla. and Louisiana are the only states without trout. Sea trout (weakfish) don't count. Most of the southern states have bottom release tailwaters or winter stocked lakes. Even Hawaii has trout. This is probably a trick question and Fla. and La. have some very short seasoned stocked ponds. Charlie

Always thought I'd really like AZ till going there-Snowstorms and blizzards high up-desert and prickly stuff all over down low. Game and fish -yes- but ya gotta drive a gazillion miles to find stuff. SNAKES SNAKES SNAKES When ya say a state has lotsa stuff in it take an outline of the state and place it over a map of the Northeast-big state- lotsa stuff- yep big drivin to find it too - no dif than the driving ya gotta do now. If your goin for the warm dry weather OK but remember- dont make any difference bout all that 'dry heat' talk -- 110 is 110. Fella told me once its nice to vacation in places but if you wanna move there - RENT for 6 months or a year first-full time makes a difference.

I lived in New Mexico for over 10 years (Albuquerque). Weatherwize - much better than AZ - summer temps rarely exceeded 95deg, and the humidity was nill - unlike the Phoenix area that is quite humid due to irrigation and countless swimming pools. Also, in NM you used a swamp cooler for the house - cost about 20 a month to run -vs- $400 month AC bills for a house in Arizona. It was nice to look out the window and see Mt Taylor 80 miles away.. Northern NM was a hunting/fishing paradise - especially up around the Four Corners, Durango Colorado area. San Juan river is a famous river that has rainbows the locals accurate describe as "footballs" I might be taking a vacation out there in March - to visit a few old friends. later d00ds

That's cool, Drake. I have a piece of property outside of Belen, south of Alb. I was going to move there many years ago, but the girl I was going to move there with.... kinda moved somewhere else... I kept the property. Never know... the taxes are cheap. It's at the foot of the Manzano Mts. The San Juan and the creeks in the Jemez Mts. are none too shabby. Nancy and I seem to have desert rat in our genes. Or at least in my case, just rat. Snakes, who's afraid of snakes. Try walking down railroad tracks at night in March and April in Az. Warm cinder bed, coldblooded creatures trying to get warm.... Makes for some real excitement. Now, scorpions, they suck! Charlie

RT - in most cases, a horse will let you know there is a snake close by b4 you have a chance to get off. Me thinks your biggest challenge will be to stay in the saddle.. Fichy - small world - spent plenty of time down in Belen - around the Bosque Del Apache bird sanctuary - thousands of cranes homesteaded there in the winter. Xmas time I would party with my friends family down there - slaughter a pig and roast it in the ground, carne adovada, posole and a wee bit of Tekilla. I miss the luminari - (for you yankee heathens they are candles placed in small brown paper bags with some sand to weigh them down) Xmas light decorations. later d00ds
