Twin lakes

What do you all use for catfish up at twin lakes? i've been trying all summer for a decent size one. I keep hearing about people catching monsters but i'm having no luck, i caught two at different times (around 10-11") by accident on the lower lake, also where do they hide? i have a portable fish finder and i rented a boat and pretty much mapped out the entire lake and found no noticable drop offs or structure, fairly smooth bottom

The cats in that lake are a mystery to me as well. But as far as the carp go, just walk the trail around the lake til you find a big patch of muddy water in the shallows, if you see an occasional carp tail come up near the surface you found the feeding fish. And that's been the key for me.

For the most part all the big cats have been fished out of there.  I've put a ton of time into catfishing at twin lakes and the number of cats that I have caught has steadily declined over the past couple years.  You can still catch a lot of yellow bullheads out there but as far as channels and brown bullheads go you'd be better off trying somewhere else.

As far as the carp go try fishing at night for them.  I try to switch up my baits a lot because twin lakes gets pressured so hard I think the fish get used to seeing the same baits day in and day out.  I've caught some big carp out there on weird baits like hotdogs and butterbeans.  If you do fish at night for carp keep you lantern turned down as low as possible, keep it away from the edge of the water and just sit still without making any noise.  Those carp will spook easily if they notice any movement/noise around the shoreline.

Any idea why they don't stalk catfish there any more? I was talking to a fish and game officer awhile back and he said they don't stalk catfish there anymore but never said why. I'd love to pull a 20lb catfish out of the lakes

I just came back from fishing the lower lake, very little open water, what was open yesterday froze last nite & was slowly thawing to-day. Most of the open water was near the breast. Saw a couple trout caught. Also talked to a guy that said he caught ,weighed & released a 20# channel at the upper lake this summer,on crawlers. sam

i would be willing to bet that there are less than a handful of big cats left in twin lakes.  they supposedly stocked twin in 2010 and prior to that the last time they stocked channels out there was in 2006.  i think they cut back on stocking due to lack of natural reproduction.

If you want come spring if you want to learn some different techniques for carp I can show you a few things when I come out that way. Its easier to show hands on than try to explain it.

The cats are in there...The lower lake is mostly a uniform muck bottom, found it best to keep moving every so often inside of sitting in one spot, and the right bait works wonders ...

Most fish in that place are pressured besides the dum stockies, use stuff others aren't and think outside the box and you'll catch them...

I've never fished for cats in Twin Lakes, but the absolute best channel cat bait I've ever used is cut trout.

Plenty of trout in there. Bet the big cats feast on those buggers.

As hard as it may be to believe,my fish'n bud was at the upper lake to-day 1-14-12 this afternoon & there was NO ice on the upper lake. I guess due to the steady wind last night. Prob. change to-nite because of the low wind. This crazy weather is really firing up the "ritus" brothers. I can hardly move my arms. sam

Thanks for the report Sam although I am guessing this 24/48 hours will do the "damage" now that the wind has gone. However...like last week a good rain is coming again with temps rising....
