juniata river brown trout
i hope this pic shows up so i bought my girlfirend a new rod/reel combo and some new lures for christmas. we decided to go out monday to some of my favorite walleye spots. and to my suprise this is what she catches....24 inche brownie. her biggest to date. and yes it was returned to fight another day. i loved her reaction when i said "ok throw it back". not bad for her first fish on her new rod. i was very proud of her. she can def fish. and yes she outfished me that day. she wasnt cold after catching that one. litterally about ten seconds before she hooked up i had a nice brown on myself but six pound test and strong current didnt hold up.. that would have been an amazing double..o well theres always next time.

Great job and nice fish! What a nice way to break in a new rod and reel. It is a good thing it was released. The Juniata River is not an approved trout water, something most people are not aware of, and I believe the season is out on non-approved trout waters.

Nice trout, there is some big boys in there at certain areas, and winter is a good time to get'em.

You CAN fish any unapproved trout water 365 days a year - BUT you can only keep fish from the opening of regular trout to the end of the regular trout season.(usually around early Setpember) This is FACT, as many of my regular haunts fall into this category, and I spoke numerous times about this with a friend of mine who is a WCO about this fact. Alot of people think you cant even fish these waters, but you can, just C & R only.

The state record brook trout was taken a few years back in Cambria County and was disallowed as the record and confiscated by the Fish comm. because it was taken in a non approved trout lake. Still, a massive and prehistoric lookin fish....WF

If the fish was caught in-season at a lake open to the public, then it should be good. Great fish and pic, too! Thanks to the OP for sharing.

He did not release it. Being a glory hound, I may have done the same thing and paid the fine. You never know until you are in that situation. They confiscated the fish, as they should have. Dam near shot a triple on a grouse flush once, missed the first bird. If a WCO was watching, and I hit the first bird, I would still have taken the 3 rd shot, and paid the fine....WF..P.S. I'm still a liar that I got the double

It may well be possible that they did not know about the Labor day end-of-season on non approved trout waters.

Don't know. The picture and article about the catch was in the Johnstown paper and the follow up article about the WCO report was in about a week later. The fish in the picture was immpressive indeed. It was obivious that the angler knew nothing about the approved trout water regulation.I think the fish was in the 9lb range...WF

thanks for all your responses. she was very happy with herself. We have a fishing date this weekend for some walleyes and bass, but ill take a trout like that anyday over any walleye. i have some river trout pics from last year im gonna get up on here this weekend. some brusers for shure.. i def have a hot spot for the brown trout in the river. its only about a half mile stretch that we catch them in regurally. we seem to pick them up on a regular basis now. im not complaining at all. we see them jumping completely out of the water almost every time were out too. most people dont believe us when we say we catch them in the river....its alway "there isnt no trout living in that river" keep thinkin that people...ill catch them myself then.lol

spaceman, I live in Newport and was fishing in the Juniata near Millerstown. This guy comes floating down stream by me and pulls up a stringer with a 20"+ Palimino trout. He says he caught it with a spinner on the other side of the river near the skid plant. It most likely came out of Raccoon Creek. BTW that's a real nice brownie your GF caught. Congrats to her.

NO!. You can fish NON approved trout waters 365. You can't fish for anything, let alone trout, in approved trout waters, during the "closed" season.

My neighbor down the road caught a 30 inch plus brown trout weighing 14 lb 9 oz out of Raystown Lake tail race. Looks like he kept it from the picture I saw. He was fishing for muskies. Beautiful fish. It was in Sunday's Post Gazette paper. Anyone else see it?
The only thing better than 1 day of fishing is 2 days of fishing.
