Anyone get any gear for Christmas
I got A fly vice and tool kit, alot of underarmour and good wool socks for cold weather and a vest. One of the best things I got though was about a 2 year supply of REAL LEAD from the mil from N. Carolina. There is no comparison between real lead and the stuff they pass of for split here in NY. I am also going to Bass Pro tomorrow with a gift card to get a landing net, a few small fly boxes, some pink worms to try out and some tying materials if they have any. If all is good with family and friends that is the best present you could ask for, but a little new gear always helps.

Boy oh boy clint; sounds like you are seriously hooked man...lol Hey, I got my son a little fly tying kit that came with some materials, tools and hooks. Actually gonna sit down with him now to spin one up before he goes to bed. For me, no new gear. Don't really need much these days except for the smaller things like leader, materials, weights...etc... good luck with your tying kit. Its definitely a rewarding feeling to catch one on your own...

Yoyo Clint: Since you got a fly tying kit and mentioned a pink worm, let me offer you up a great pattern for you to tie so you can forgoe buying them gummy bear Berkley Power Bait worms. I first learned this pattern from an old gent in Pa named Fred Bridges. They are a simple to tie and they work. Here is a youtube tutorial made by another guy - same recipe. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. INFAMOUS PINK WORM later

Good deal on the lead, Clint. Tin sucks. I got a Kindle given to me for the purpose of having a book to bring on camping/fishing trips (we go often) and having the WIFI ability to get river reports and flows , tide charts, weather etc... wherever we travel. I was kinda bummed I didn't get something fishing related as I ALWAYS do, but after playing around with it and Nancy explaining why she thought it was useful, I kinda like it. HT's wife showed us one, gave her the idea. Charlie

clint a vise and tying are some serious gifts.. the rewards follow for years to come.. Great gift man.. db, another kudos to the boy, wish my kid tied flies for me..lol.. fichy, have no idea about the kindle thing.. maybe some day but it sounds like a sweet addition to the gear man.. myself ? some pretty sweet cash to spend on new gear.. I have my eye on a vexlir f-18 .. if only the ice would come I could justify pulling the trigger.. other wise, more tackle can always be good :) Peace & Tuna

Just got back from Bass Pro. I got this sweet folding net that will fit in my backpack. http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Gold-Series-Folding-Landing-Net-with-35-Fixed-Handle/product/10210370/112480 I also got a bunch of materials and a package of pink worms. I had a 75$ gift card so I was $5 out of pocket Drake, that looks killer. The link is bookmarked and next time I swing by a shop I am going to pick up the Pink Chanile (sp) to tie it. Fichy, I got my wife a Kindle and she loves it. HT, I will try it out the vice and stuff tomorrow. Even though it is a cheaper model I can always upgrade later and it will be an upgrade from the wood clamp and vice grips I was using. PS if it is not raining tomorrow and everthing works out I may go up for a couple of hours

Hey clint; if your vice is the type with the lever on end with adjustable lock nuts above: try to keep it adjusted so the hook is clamped tight when the lever is halfway down (not all the way)... this will prolong the life of the vise and it will hold your hook more secured as well... You don't want to be cranking down on it too hard for wearing prevention. I learned on a vise like that but its been a long time since I've used one. It took a few times to get comfortable with my sons; after a few ties it was no bother... on the other hand; definitely braking out the renzetti tomorrow.

nice video - that headcam takes good video - no fisheye lens like others I've seem. Clint - unless you tie a chitload of flies like a commercial tier - you don't need a high-end rotary vise. I bought a cheapo vise years ago and still use it - but I admit I limit myself to tying a dozen flies at a time before my ADD kicks in. Chenille - another little tip is to use a Bic lighter and scorch the ends a bit after you tie the fly - will keep the chenille from unraveling and also creates a realistic looking worm butthole...

Thanks Drake, those were my thoughts too on the vice, and I will do the lighter trick I am going to look through my stuff now and tie a few stones up I think. PS The weather here is not cooperating 30 to 40mph wind gusts and sideways snow, heavy at times. Looks like winter is finally here. I may just stay cozy and watch a bunch of those Storage auction show's, but we will see what the afternoon brings.

Scorching the ends is definitely necessary drake... helps it stay together and keep its form....not sure of the actual name of the chennile that works best; but when I've tied san juan worms I always used this stuff I called micro chenille that was extra stiff and it usually came in its own metal roller that could be attached to a bobbin...almost looked like a tiny fly reel spool... As said; nothing wrong with the starter vises; used them for years...on the other hand; there's nothing wrong with a renzetti or regal that both make models under 200...

Just looked at the levels and they shot up overnight more than expected. River is just above 1500 and other favorite haunts are up to around 1000. May just go to Melinda's for the chenille. The last time I stopped in she was very helpful, I showed her a fly and she pointed out all the stuff to tie it. Even showed my a few tricks too. Willing to pay a little more for quality materials and keep the money local.

Willing to pay a little more for quality materials and keep the money local. Malinda sells Eagle Claw Lightning Strike hooks that are 13 cents apiece in 100 packs for scud/emergers.(Good egg hook) That's a good buy for quality Japanese steel, chemically sharpened hooks. I believe they are made by Daiichi, and identical to Orvis hooks at twice the price. I was a commercial tyer and worked out of a good fly shop; Malinda carries quality -her prices are reasonable, not inflated. Just shop carefully- there are specialty items that are pricey and geared towards salmon/spey flies . I tend to mass produce flies that work- I hate leaving artwork in fish and mono-balls. Charlie

I would guess that it is the same thing packaged and marketed by different companies and called something different by each. I couldn't tell them apart.

Well I just ran the plow truck up and down the drive a few times to make sure it would work and shoveled off the back steps. I guess winter is officially here.
