Winter Yough Fishing

Anyone fish the Yough this time of year? Thinking about heading down to fish between the Pyle and Confluence. Anyone been out? Report?

It's up a little, but the fish are hungry. There are a ton of escaped fish at the outflow, CRTU lost some fish out of the nets and they were rising pretty good yesterday in the morning. Saw some guys under the 281 bridge catching a few.

Thanks! By outflow do you mean right below the falls or further down? We planned on hitting along the bike trail then heading down below the 381 bridge.

We always do well near Connellsville. The wading is rough but we tear them up with homemade lures that look like joes flys....we use 10' rods with spinning reels.

I wondered what the fishing's like where the beach area is below the 318 bridge where swimmers lay during the summer...the water is not that bad there. I have seen huge trout come flopping down the nature slide, heard they were from hardy's place, not certain on my info guy on that 1 but i do see them coming down the little creek quit often.

Meadow should be getting stocked here soon...

that small bow is a fingerling most likely... loads of them in meadow this time of year.

    I agree with Jefff,

If you have never fished the Yough, then starting at the outflow in Confluence would be a great start. The Yough can be a very hard river to wade in certain areas so be prepared and I strongly suggest felt boots with studs and perhaps a wading staff to probe the depth of water and assist your balance if needed.

Flies of choice: wooly buggers or minnow patterns in a silver gray color to match the alewife minnows that are predominant, plenty of sculpins in the Yough, midge patterns, caddis larvae and stone flies.

3" Alewives everywhere.I caught a 12" brown today as fat as a light bulb, stuffed with minnows. Downriver, the fish were full of caddis larvae and minute mayflies, probably pseudo's.Flashed a big fish on a white bunny fly,but the streamer action was slow.

Does the yough stay at a relatively stable temp from the dam release? Just curious how well the river fishes during the winter. Thanks, guys.

Alewives? Was at the outflow two times lately and was wondering what the little guys were? Do they come out of the lake? Thru the turbines? Saw some live ones and some dead ones. The outflow itself looks like it would be tough to fish with a fly rod. Any info would be nice, since the area is so well known; I'm sure it gets fished pretty hard.
