January Steelhead

Happy Holidays to all

Will be heading to the west side tribs in January. Just a day trip, however i'v never fished steel this early in the year. Or this late in the season. Any suggestions on what flys they like at this time of year? What sizes work and any specific techniques to try? Thanks

It really depends on stream conditions. Ive caught them swinging huge flies in january, and ive caught them on small nymphs/single eggs..etc.

drumR is right, it's no different any other time of the year.  Your fly selection should be dictated by stream conditions and not what month it is.  The lower and clearer the water is, the smaller your tackle and offerings should get.

If it's going to be below freezing during your trip, then I would recommend taking a spinning rod as well as your fly rod, unless you don't mind throwing frozen ropes all day and clearing ice out of twice as many eyelets.  I've seen guys do very well bouncing bead head nymphs along the bottom on a spinning rod.

SteelSlayer77 along with FWD are right n with the advise.  Especially on using the tackle.  I just bought a used 11.6 old eagle claw just for that application.   I can fish alll the flys I want with that rod and my 2500 Diawa.

What tribs are you going to? I like sucker spawn and single eggs. I don't
Throw streamers much when it's really cold out.

Make sure you have a 4X4 and some food. Also fish with a buddy.

I like bait when the water is cold, single eggs fished with a flyrod or tip just about any small, black fly with maggots or a waxworm. As the water gets colder the fish tend to get a little more sluggish and getting them to move out of a hole and take a fly can be a a little more challenging than usual. Bait usually motivates the steelhead to move a little and your casts won't have to be as perfect. Hope this helps and good luck.
