Did my eggs go bad
When fishing on Sunday I bounced some egg sacs.t I took them out of the freezer and placed them in my car in my garage the night before. Then a 45 minute drive with the heat on in the car. I went to pop one to test it's texture and it was pastey like creme of wheat. Before I froze them they were like syrup inside. Are they bad or is that how they come out after freezing.

If they look like they did b4(outside) they're alright--I wouldn't b too concerned. Have always used some sort of cure--I do have some guide friends that use frozen.

They look the same on the outside, just not the inside. I will hang onto them then.

Clint - in my limited experience - the eggs will get funky after a thaw/re-freeze process. I also know that some guys insist on crushing the sack a bit to get the juices flowing - so a little bit of funk in the water column is probably a good thang. I'd say you are good to go. ********* Topdog - regarding your sig line - Erie did have bigger steel than Ontario - back in the dayz when the mills were runnin... These days you gotz Keebler feesh, burrowing their way upstream through pizz trickles that are trampled by hordes of unwashed masses. later d00ds

Hey clint; are they store bought??? If so I find they never stand up well when frozen... I usually keep them in fridge rather than freezer...

These are ones I did myself, I think I water hardened them a bit too much too. I will just keep using them.

Never really did the water hardening myself; but anyone I've known that does it never freezes them; also, water hardening has a shorter shelf life and to my knowledge they shouldn't be froze... I'm not saying that they will not work though.

Well Something got messed up here. I water hardened them for like 45 minutes or so and then soaked them in a salt water brine. Then froze them up.

I dried them real good near my wood stove for like an hour or so. This was my first try so nothing lost. Next time I will try the Borax cure, and really make sure they are dry. I usually peg a bead on top so I may still use them and see how they turn out.

ORIGINAL: topdog99 HI HO the onterio Gotta say - them rainbow troots in the Catt sure look pretty & fresh. I never fished the Catt. I guess the fact that it is very tempermental with flows and it's a looong drive to take a chance. Don't know if the past reports of vehicle vandalism on the reservation are true or not, but that sort of plays in my head for a NO vote. Another pay to play stretch of water. But if I chose to, I'd rather give my money to the Seneca's instead of DSR Barclay. I supported them when they set the interstate on fire years ago - to protest the scumbag NY politicos in Albany that wanted to tax their smoke business. later

Most of the vandalizm talk is from guides that don't want people up there to fish but since the guides are no longer allowed to guide on the res the rumors should slow down.

Here is an update on this. I actually found a vial of eggs left over from that day in my garage. It has been cold, but not freezing. It seems that on the day in question that my eggs were not completely thawed and when putting them in the near freezing water compounded this. I pinched a few of the eggs before I threw them away and although they were a little tough skinned (too much time for the water cure I think) they seemed fine with a clear gooey texture on the inside. I think I fridge them for about a week before I plan on using them next to make sure they are thawed. May tie up a few small sacs for winter and save the rest for the sharks when they come in next fall.
