Pictures again from the window

Now that the snow has arrived and the woods have quieted they are returning to eat grass under the snow in the back yard and scrounge around under the bird feeders.

12 boys today.

finally saw my birds this morning while sitting in my stand. They flew out of the roost around 720 and made alot of racket.
I heard every call I think they can make. Gobbles, cuts, clucks, purrs but no keekee,s. Guessing 20 or 25 of them. Even fighting purrs.
Was glad to get all those eyes away from me. Spooked one deer going in, that was it till 10. Rain came down fairly hard after that.
Was surprised the muzzy went off after getting back to the house.

Love to have Turkeys around when Deer hunting- They seem to be in the same places all too often to be coincidence. Have seen them feed through the same places shortly after one another  or sometimes simply use the same crossings and trails in short order of each other---more eyes more security????
Have had Deer approach Turkey decoys and or hang around watching the decoys  so often that I commonly put one or two out when Bow hunting from a  stand. Sometimes they stop and stare at a distance and then walk off only to return from downwind 15 or 20 minutes later and watch the Decoys.
Sometimes  draw pentagrams in the dirt and dance around them too- anything helps.

Hey Eman- for all the talk bout how good Turkeys can see sometimes they miss the decoys. If you can use a decent stake and set it so there will be movement from the wind or breeze moving the decoy it helps tremendously.
Had a set out once and a Tom was struttin bout 50 yds off- clucked and purred for an hour till he moved off on an angle kinda towards me and goin off uphill. The wind blew and the decoys moved and he looked over and went nuts- came right in. Always figured that was the first time he had actually seen the decoys.
Sometimes I use a string to move the darned things. Put a long eyebolt in the ground under the front of the bird and run a string to the neck and through the eye back to your position. -put a small rock in the tail of the Decoy- When ya pull on the string the head bobs up and down - looks like its feeding and ads the desired movement for the Tom to pickup on. Gotta be sure thats not considered a mechanical device and is legal for ya. Cheapo decs seem to work just as good as the pricey ones.
BTW- be careful of buying Tom decoys- -used to use a Jake and a hen and sometimes other Jakes would shy off and once in a while a Tom would 'fight purr' upon spotting it and come right in-feast or famine with them. Went back to just hens.

Thanks for the tip. I will try to put up a picture of the turkey that i shot a couple years ago. I usually use my dads decoys but with me now away at school I'm forced to buy my own things. I was going to buy two hens and a jake. I have been looking at walmart for cheap ones did find a hen for 8 bucks. I have been looking on the classifieds for some used ones as well. My little sister shot a big one last year with her crossbow.. Ed

The roll up ones with the long slit in the belly work real well for that bobbing feeding thingie - Just dont leavem rolled all the time or they always wanna bend when in the field.
Have had other hunters "sneak up" on my decs a number of times- Even more so with a Tom Dec out there - can be scarey. Some idiots get 'zeroed' and ya really start to wonder----

I shot many tukeys over decs years ago,now I seldom carry them if at all.In the woods there almost useless(can't be seen by the gobbler)for the edge of fields they work, but really don't like another hunter sneakin in on decs with me sitting 20 yards away. I don't want a face full of turkey loads,Ive had to yell STOP to more than one ying yang through the years.
