Both. They will hit on the rise or the lift. I've even had them hit on a pause at the bottom. Keep the line tight on the fall and you'll see your line go slack before it hits bottom or at the bottom of the drop. I lik to keep my blade about a foot off the bottom cause in these colder temps I like a slow presentation with a couple second pause at the bottom.
The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

Mr. Crappie I've never lost any blade bait while ice fishing to a fish or a snag,now fishing open water is another story. People that can't afford lures kill me,yet the guy will buy a bucket of minnows and dump them into the lake or buy crawler and let them die. A few years back a friend and I played around with stocked trout at a local lake ( I don't fish for trout much through the ice)they where just spanking the smallest jigging Rap a $4 lure.He would not buy one because THEY COST TO MUCH,yet every day he bought a bucket of minnows that cost at least $4 and had to get cold wet hands every time he had a hit.I've still got the 5 jigging raps I bought and for the same price and he got nothing. I have bought thousands of lures and lost plenty but I do have plenty of old lures that still get fished every year. It's an investment.

Big tuna, I agree with not losing many lures while fishing through the ice or even from a boat, but fishing from shore in a lake or river is another story. Doesn't take too many snags before you start to feel the pinch,esp. at $4-$7 a lure.Whereas with minnows or crawlers you only lose a hook & split shot plus the bait & still have a few dozen left.However if you see someone catching fish on a lure then I suggest you buy 2or3 I know that I have. BTW, I still catch fish on some dare-devils that I have used since the 60s. sam

ive lost a few of my favorite vertical lures to huge mystery fish.....more than ive lost to debris snags anyway.

What # test line do you use, knowing a larger fish may hit your lure? Walleye,bass, ect.
You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

I carry 8 rods with 2-8lb fluro for most situations and 1 with 20lb fireline for jigging for the big toothy critters. Don't like using steel leaders through the ice for them and (knock on wood) haven't had a break off yet. I run the 20lb fireline for my big tip ups for them also.
I caught a 4lb eye on a small cicada with 1 double hook tipped with waxies while jigging for gills on the 2lb line. Same as normal open water fishing just set the drag or back real and play them out.
The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

Another? I picked up some 1/8 and 1/4 Buckshoot Rattle Spoons along with some small Rapala jiging shad raps. is 4# test line too light when fishing at Pymie for crappie?

Now I think I got it right!! 20# test if I want to catch Muskies 2# test if I feel real lucky and don't care if I lose a lure or two.

You got it. Haha. I usually use the 4lb for crappies, 2lb for gills and the 6-8lb for targeting eyes depending on the presentation for the eyes.

the line i choose usually depends on the structure, depth and water clarity im fishing... not so much the fish im targeting. i do think the best set up is a base of 8 lb line and a 2-3 ft leader of lighter line attached by swivel.....simply because ive had 2 and 4 lb line get cut on the hole by agressive or larger fish.
