allegheny river eye

Tried my luck on the winter river eyes for the first time ever today for a couple hours. Got this healthy 17" fish and missed one other. The fish and the hit came on a couple of the biggest chubs I had, though they only went bout 3". The strong wind made detecting light bites very tricky. Thanks to all the guys who gave me pointers.

    Very nice.

Just a suggestion here, but I would say if you lose the jighead and you will catch more fish.  Cold water and light biting fish don't like to feel any resistance when they pick the bait up.

Maybe throw out the live stuff, and let it sit and fish with jigs & twisters at the same time? A guy I knew used to do that all the time. Doubles your odds.

Question. Would you use a floating jighead or a lead one? I'm still experimenting, but seem to have a little better luck with a floater and live bait.

I considered hook and a split shot or hook and floating jig. But with the size of my jig compared to the size of the minnow I don't think the walleye minded the extra weight. But I will try it next time. I'm not crazy about the hooks on those jigs ne way. I did have one larger minnow out on the bottom w a slip rig on my bait runner both days. It went untouched. Thanks for all the feed back guys.

catman - Most small creeks are low and clear right now and you can see the chubs in them don't worry if they're small. Put a piece of pizza crust in a minnow trap and place it in a deeper section with and you'll get the bigger ones over night

wouldn't you like to know... I have at least a half dozen different spots I trap at dif times of the year for dif sizes and species. That spot has lots of bigguns and lots of crayfish in the summer too. I have another spot with at least 4 different minnow species including what I believe are fatheads. Google earth is your friend. Find a creek close by and follow it to a hole, then go try it!

u will catch more fish on a jig as long as you keep it moving cover more water that way
use at least a no#4 hook any smaller they tend to swallow it

This fish is called Perch with our frequently Peca on the Danube. If your interested in a system where you are in our peca I'll be glad to paint and try to explain how we do it in Yugoslavja
