Big Bore .54 T/C Renegade 100gr FF and and old school 430gr T/C Maxi-Ball,still got a buck tag(any tag) and a 1A doe tag and Ohio tag.So as you can see I got a lot of work to do. Hope for a little snow 2 inches would be nice.I didn't muzzle last year because I had a great early season (bow) and Ohio gun. What a difference a year makes! I've NEVER killed a late season buck with a loader or bow,so it's sorta on my bucket list.Well wishful thinking never hurt.

I have found what I think may be good hunting close to home. I will take the flinter for some hikes after Christmas. Lefty lyman deerstalker 50 cal. 240 grain sabot. 80 grains of 2F.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Gets pretty hard to push the ball down after the 5th. shot. What was your most shots at a single deer?

Traditions break open in line with a 3/9 scope- 50 cal sabot pushing a 45 cal 250 grain hollow point with 100 grains of pyrodex pellet- 2" groups at 100----didnt help this morning - missed on an up hill in the brush all bent over shot.
Knew I pulled it as soon as I shot- followed up for an hour and a half. He looked at me- flipped up his tail and hippity hopped off. Tracked him over hill and dale anyhow. Never THINK ya missed -gotta KNOW it.
All the fun and no draggin.

Wishing that today was the start of flinter! About 1 inch of new snow on the ground here, would have been an awesome morning to hunt.

Did a 3 mile loop yesterday afternoon from 3 till dark, hoping to bump a few grouse, but mainly looking for deer activity. Plenty of sign still present and saw 6 deer. Had a group of 3 bounce, with 2 does running right to me. One stopped at 40 yds and stood looking back, would have been a nice flinter shot.

Looks like about 3-4" in McKean right now and still coming down.  Fresh snow is great, but keeping the pan dry while falling would be difficult.  Also the limbs are covered so can't see very far.  I'll bet the woods are silent though.

ready2fish, Whats a GROUSE? I remember getting 25-40 flushes a day hunting the Slippery Rock area after XMas but that been about 20 years ago.Sometimes it took that many for me to get my 2,what a great game bird to hunt and eat. I miss the old days of great to good small game hunting. Many years the gang shot 100-150 bunnies off my pack of beagles.I had a three dog pack that would run a rabbit to the hole or gun, losing the trail was not going to happen.

I'm going to try to get some answers to a question I have had for years... without a debate

I AM NO MUZZIE HUNTER and know little about them....

The only experience I have had is someone loaded and I fired one several times at the sportmen's club last year at our muzzie shoot... I kind of liked it .. was not very good on those few shots... and with all the stories of mis-fires and misses.. really have not tried to take up the sport...

Here's the question.. I can understand miss-fires... I saw many at the shoot.. just a click and a "puff" no bang..

But why do so many "miss" ..

Is it range .. or just not aiming properly.. or somehthing else gun related ??

I really would like to understand this .. so please. I don't want arguments about it.. just some info on "why"

    THANKS...

    RE: Who,s muzzle loading 2011/12/18 10:58:37 (permalink)
I think it is a varied combination of things that cause people to miss with a flintlock.

One is the fact is that frequently there is an instant between the flash of the pan and discharge of the powder in the barrel and ball or bullet leaving the barrel. Watching most people shoot it is apparent they flinch a bit when the powder in the pan goes off and before the shot leaves the barrel, thus a miss. It is really important to have good follow through during the entire shot with a flintlock.

Another factor is most hunters aren’t real comfortable with open sights and many fail to get good sight alignment before the shot.

Many hunters also try to shoot too far at deer with a flintlock. I consider 100 yards to really be about the maximum for a flintlock shot though I guess I would still make an attempt if it were a perfect shot and a bit over.

I rarely have misfires because I take great care to keep my powder dry and refreshed while hunting but also because I keep my flints in good condition and alighted to strike correctly on the right location of the frizzen.

I have a coupe T/C Hawken .50 caliber rifles that I use. I still shot round balls out of them with .015 patches and 100 grains of Triple Seven granulated powder.

    RE: Who,s muzzle loading 2011/12/18 11:03:15 (permalink)
Could be a lot of reasons Doc.  You said they got the pan to light but no bang.  Was this after shooting a few rounds?  Could have been a fouled touch hole, wet breach when loaded powder, using old powder that collected moisture, the list goes on.  if it was true blackpowder then they can be a bit more touchy.  i've noticed the synthetics, pydrodex, 777, etc are more tolerant to moisture, but don't ignite as easily.  that is why the pressed pellets have a bit of blackpowder on the ends.  there are a few flintlocks on the market that can use pellets, but not many.  mine is rated for them, but i prefer loose 777.  never had a problem with bang, but have my share of no-poofs from time to time.

at the range i've noticed some folks doing some strange things with flintlocks, done some myself.  perhaps the strangest was the fella trying to crush pydrodex pellets for his pan powder.  i gave him some of my 4f.

the flint can be frustrating too.  fine tuning only lasts so many hits before you need to adjust.  but it's all these things that draw us to the challenge.

I believe this is the #1 reason for an actual miss. Misfires can be any combination of things.

Agreed,S-10. Also as RSB said, most hunters are not that comforable with open sights. Also, small tree limbs, that you don't see, deflect the lead alot...WF

Am glad Ct went to in lines- cant see the back sight on open sights anymore- looks like 2 or 3 sights all fuzzzy. Gotta use a scope. Even the peep didnt go well.
Ahhhhhh the aging process. Used one of those muzzel blasters with the rear sight way out in front and that helped but the sights  were still too close for my eyes @ way too close together. really hurt the grouping-
