Smelt

Anyone know a general area you can catch them from shore or eventually threw the ice?

    I'd say Lake Michigan, but that probably doesn't help...   Fattest brown trout I ever saw came when fishing the smelt run.  Bowling ball bellies with still more smelt falling out of their mouths.

    A few years ago you could catch a load threw the ice at the isle. It seems the last 2 yrs. has shown few there...good luck.

    Yeah two years ago I could drop half a minnow and catch 200 of the things now I can't get more than a dozen in a day

    I know this isn't the answer your looking for, but I buy smelt by the bag in the frozen food section at the local China-Mart, and use them through the ice as bait. Am not aware of any place around these parts where they can be caught. Raystown Lake or its tribs maybe?????????????

    Sooo... Trebbles it is then. Kidding. Just curious cuz a heard about a smaller lake near me loaded w em and wanted to catch some in spring for bait.

    Pike love dead smelts through the ice on a quick set rig.
