I'd say Lake Michigan, but that probably doesn't help... Fattest brown trout I ever saw came when fishing the smelt run. Bowling ball bellies with still more smelt falling out of their mouths.

A few years ago you could catch a load threw the ice at the isle. It seems the last 2 yrs. has shown few there...good luck.

Yeah two years ago I could drop half a minnow and catch 200 of the things now I can't get more than a dozen in a day

I know this isn't the answer your looking for, but I buy smelt by the bag in the frozen food section at the local China-Mart, and use them through the ice as bait. Am not aware of any place around these parts where they can be caught. Raystown Lake or its tribs maybe?????????????
