Peters Creek

I went to Peters Creek last weekend and this is the first time I have fished there in approximately 4 years. There were hardly any fish in some prime holes. There weren't even the usual sucker fish. Somebody told me there was some type of spill up stream somewhere. I was curious if this is true?

Peters creek will never appear on the stocking list. This creek is not stocked by the fish commission, it is done by the Peters Creek Watershed Association. Since they are a local club supported only by member fees, they do not publish stocking dates. If interested, you can help them by joining at: http://www.peterscreek.org/

I was down in the tunnel by greenman. There was a fat brownie and 2 or 3 bows swimming around, but I couldn't coax any into bibting. Tried an x-rap 6, x-rap 4, rebel minnow, rebel tenny-wee craw, and a 2 different color rattling rapalas.

And ginger hackled green woolley buggers.

I'm sure you can, but I have never heard of trout being taken on jitterbugs. Mostly a large mouth, small mouth & pike lure IMO. Although, I have heard of large brown trout, being very aggressive (people using mouse flies). So, might be worth a shot. I would tend to think that the jitterbugs would scare more fish than catch though, in Peters, but who knows. I've done better down there on much smaller offerings myself.

Yeah! You know whats even crazier? I was up on the border of Cameron and Potter over Thanksgiving rustling through the brush of the spring creeks chasing down some brooks and browns. At the confluence of two springs there was a whirling pool. It was the perfect location. They were hitting and spitting nymphs all day long, so I tied on one of those buggers. Above the bugger, I put on a yellow foam beetle that I usually use for walleye and bass down on the yough (as a strike indicator). I wanted a couple of pics of the beautiful surroundings, so I sorta flung the line out into the water to keep it out of the brush while I took the pics.

So I get a couple nice pics and put the camera away. I pick up my rod, and the thing starts jiggling! I draw in the line, and there on the foam beetle is a the most elegant, scintillating jewel of the mountains- a natural brookie flushed with fall coloring.

Can you believe that? One of the smartest and most wily fish ever known to exist hit a top water bass bug in late November.

And there I stood. In that moment of truth. When all other things unconsciously melt away, and realized that I just tricked a fish with a brain the size of a finger nail clipping with some craft foam, rubber legs, and a couple of feet of black thread.

    Freakin Crazy, Huh?

Wow dude, accomplished writer and fisherman. You should definitely write a book!

To catch such a smart and wily fish in the middle of November and on a dry? Whoa, you need to have your own TV show as well. You are an extreme talent my friend.

I on the other had would have wrote something along the lines of: " in mid November, still pretty decent dry fly time here in southwest pa, I was using my go to dry and casting a foam beetle. I dropped a nymph off of it because I'm not real confident in my dry fly fish abilities. I slayed stockies on that nymph all day, and then the big surprise came. I caught the most opportunistic feeder, a native brook. This fish would have rose to a cigarette butt had I floated it passed him but lucky for me I'm a fly fisherman and i caught him on my foam beetle! I'm quite amazing, I know I know..

I realized that I had a sucker on with the mention of buggers and nymphs in a discussion of catching stockies. He stuck quickly with sarcasm, so I played him a little let him run with the line.

His ego glistened as he whipped his head around what he thought were clever retorts. One of the finest fighters of his philogeny, A Fly Fishing RockStar!

It was in that moment that all else unconsciously melted away from my mind. I stood there on my interwbs with eyes wide, caught in a battle stance with an idea of confidence and hope.

Then I realized that I just tricked a fish with a brain the size of a fingernail clipping with some fuzz and feathers.

Happy fishing! Try not to take yourself to seriously.
