I had a coyote run down a draw in front of me and counted eight shots. If he was going as fast and in as thick stuff as when he passed me he was probably working for an ammo company because he sure wasn't in much danger. I haven't heard 91 shots since the season came in.

I am a counter, The first day I stopped counting 45 minutes into the season when the first set of deer were coming in to my stand, I just never got back on track after they went through.

The first 45 minutes i was up to 57 shots. Then the rest of the day (this is a guess) at least 250 for the first day. No hearing amplfilication, just my plain ear.

I spent Fri-Sun on public land in Ohio.  While I didn't count every single shot for the Saturday (I don't if I could have counted that high) I heard roughly 100 by 9am and another 100 from 430pm-dark.  I would not be scared to say that I heard well over 300 total shots for Saturday.  I guess money is no object in Ohio as it is shotgun/muzzy only and cheap saboted slugs run in excess of $2 a pop.

Yeah I count shots! First day I hunted 2C, near Hecla, I stopped counting @ 10 am at that time I was at 87. When doe ran consecutively with buck it would be 150 by lunch time.

Kinda my experience as well.  I don't count but this year has been the lowest I can remember in these parts.  I have been out days thus far.

If I try to count the fish I catch, I lose count at about 6 or 7 so it'd be worthless to try counting shots. I will try on Saturday.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

A lot of that shot counting depends on your location. Top of ridges hear more than hollows, flat ground vs sharp, steep ridges, etc. Of course it doesn't hurt to have a couple deer to shoot at either.

Been very surprised by the relative lack of shooting overall.

Have hunted about 9 hours in 2D (split season) - including the morning of opening day, last Thursday evening and last Saturday evening. I've heard maybe 25 shots, including time when I was at home last Saturday for most of the day while my wife worked and I was on dad duty. Definitely more deer around where I hunt in 2D the past couple of years with the split seasons. Far less hunters though it seems.

Have hunted about 7 hours in 2B (basically unlimited tags and opportunities to shoot does) - including the late afternoon/evening of opening day, one morning hunt and one evening hunt. First day I heard maybe 15 shots in 4 hours. Two other days, I've heard maybe 10 shots combined. I duck hunted in 2B this morning, and did not hear one shot.

First day in 2B there are usually about 10 shots an hour. In the immediate area of 2B in Butler County that I hunt, the deer herd has been absolutely pounded the past 5-6 years, but I've also seen a lot less hunters driving to and from hunting there. Although on the property I hunt in 2B, I am seeing probably 30% more deer this year than I did last year.

I often count shots while on stand....not sure why but it does kill boredom.

I haven't counted this year, but in 2009 on the opener of the NY season I counted and wrote the numbers down in my treestand.  I looked at it this year and remember the numbers.  17 shots before starting time. (NY start time is sunrise...approx 7:15 where I hunt). and 268 before killing my deer at 9:17.  That day there were at least 30 shots after Sunset (quitting time in NY).

This year the shooting was similar and I suppose I heard 3-400 throughout the day in spite of the windy conditions.  Rarely do I ever hear more than 100 in PA in one day, but that is mostly due to the location in NY where I hunt as well as NY regulations.w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

I count shots too. Last saturday I counted just over 500. That included my 3 at a coyote.

Counting shots is like answering email, posting to forums, or playing Angry Birds while not seeing any deer when hunting.
