BURBOT FISHING

Going to try again this year. Does anyone have any suggestions for catching Burbot? What is the best time to go this winter?

My buddy stopped at the north pier a week ago and caught a 30 incher.Everyone he told fishing up there got really excited about it. He said it was delicious but he couldn't believe the amount of guts it had. He caught it on a minnow.

I was going to ask about it. I've heard if you think the weathers bad wish it was 10 times worse the worse the weather the better it is. Just heavy line big sink and a bunch of minnows on a hook

It's time. They like current and dark so if you can pick a night when there is a west wind and some current in the channel, a walk to the east end might get you into some B. , chowing on what is washing out of the bay.

They taste better than the ever popular steelhead, get bigger and are close to home, and I don't have to fish "shoulder to shoulder" with "mupers".

Why would I ever fish for them??

True they are a little soft, but very white and mild. They go nuts for them in some places. Like Simcoe.

Again.....I want to catch a Burbot first. I'll worry about eating them later. I no longer keep any steelhead because they taste like crap. The only way they were any good is if someone smoked them and who needs to cook a fish for 12 hours!
What is the best bait for Burbot? I have heard they only eat live bait. I have heard use cut bait. Nice try with the power bait though!

Give em the meat. My usual rig has two hooks, one with a dead smelt (from Giant Eagle) and the other with the biggest live minnow I can get.

I always heard burbot & coke tasted good. I was always a beer, and straight whiskey ( sometimes tequila ) man myself though.

Bonechilling winter nights on that windswept pier, demand the hard stuff. And don't forget how far it is to the end of that pier. A long carry.

What is the distance from the top of the pier to the water level? What kind of net would you use or do you just use strong line, big hooks and haul them up by hand. I guess a "pier net" and rope would work or can you reach them with a long handled landing net.

It depends on how close the the end you get. The pier is "staged." A pier net is a great idea--you do NOT want to fall in this time of year. The end at the lighthouse is closer to the water. But use a long handled net just the same.

Wally I use a landing net with an extendable hanle and it works well for me. When I'm there I'm usually fishing for smallmouths and steelhead with either 4 or 6 pound test.
