Stockies?
One of the east side creeks I fished this afternoon had an upstream pod of what looked like stockies from spring. 12 to 16" slender fish, definitely not jack steelhead. Anyone know where they may have come from?

I remember hearing there were smolts stocked in the fall

Smolts.New York stocks bigger smolts than PA does. That's not correct, PA and OH smolts are both bigger than what NY stocks. "The marginal return rate of NY steelhead may be a result of the small size of the steelhead smolts stocked by the NYDEC (5-5.5 inches) which could possibly be contributing to higher than normal juvenile mortality. The PA and OH smolts are much bigger averaging 6-8 inches. Steelhead smolts stocked by the NYDEC in the Western NY tributaries of Lake Erie (including many Lake Ontario tributaries) come from the Salmon River Hatchery in Pulaski, NY where the cold water source for the hatchery (temperature wise) is a limiting factor for growth rates of steelhead smolts. Pete. I know where you were at and where you were catching them, we first found them at the beginning of October, suggesting they have been up there for awhile....strange.

Dude, you are so smart. ^ Was just passing along something that I remembered reading last summer. Not sure how that's a measure of my intelligence, guess you would rather leave people think that smolts stocked by NY are bigger than PA? suggesting they have been up there for awhile....strange. Why is it strange that trout stocked in October would still be in the same area a little over 1 month later?

Trout were stocked in 20 mile creek in October? Well now that we know it's 20 mile I guess not. Should have just said that from the beginning instead of acting like it was some secret spot. lol 12" slender fish sure sounds like stocked trout to me though. I never realized that the PFBC doesn't stock any Erie county streams in the fall.

Could be I guess. They all just happened to end up at the same place at the same time. Like a gang? With no adults around? Could be. Wouldn't they be a bit bigger than 12" to 16" even after just one year in the lake?

Myself and a friend have caught a few 16" jacks this year, and have seen a few smaller than that in Elk that I think were probably steelhead.

I don't want to split hairs or give away spots but I do know a place in New York where they stock 12 to 14 inch smolts to increase their chance of survival.

Fished Trout Run access twice in the beginning of October and caught over dozen stockies. Most were brownies but all were 8-10 inches. They were swimming around our legs and were crushing minnows to the extent that you couldnt fish minnows anylonger.
However starting mid October i was there 3 times and never saw one of them.
Not sure what to think of it, but interesting none the less.

I am not questioning why they are there, just wondering where they all disappeared very suddenly and why.
It's not like they can go upstream at Trout Run.

There was a large school of small bows swimming around the mouth of 20Mile late Aug, early Sept.

is it possible one of the local clubs stocked them ?
over the years I've caught many bows that seemed too small for lake jacks and too big for lingering smolts .
I was told they were stockies from clubs
this one seems odd to me, Slayer.
I know they're not your words,

In all my years, i haven't seen many smolts at 7"
I'm not familiar with min size for keeper stockies, but "thought" I recall it was 7" in Pa ????
and I "thought" that was one of the reason why Pa didn't stock large smolts ...cause the pellethead'rs would be making samiches out of 'em during trout season
help me out, is the writer of that article in error?

If you are catching any bows, they are some life stage form of steelhead. No "stockie" rainbows are stocked in Erie, only browns and steel.

Just an FYI, early in the season (Sept and even earlier) I have found over the years that there are always smaller steelhead in the lower portion of the stream that are all between 12-18 inches. I always just assumed that they were last years smolts (stocked as 8-inchers in MArch) that decided to just run upstream a little........They are always at the same spots (obviously different fish from year to year) at the same time every year, Its something I have experienced for a long time.....even seen lots of them in late August just into the stream mouths if conditions are right (cooler with rain)......Sounds like a pod of these small steelies to me......

I can see that. They were extremely aggressive when I was catching them, crushing the minnows much harder than the grown up 6+ pounders.
