what are the problems?

If I agreed with you we’d both be wrong.

Does not seem to have enough people coming to the meetings to have a good election of officers for the up coming year.

Just the same few people that have done all the work for years.

BTW how many people would like to see warm water fish stocked by the TLFA?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I'd prefer warm water species stocked in the spring personally. Maybe some adult channel cats. Or baitfish to fatten up some of those dinky bass. Golden shiners perhaps. One of these years ill start coming to those meetings, just way too busy w work and remodeling a,house to get into all that. Thanks for posting the info though

warm water fish would be nice, what about building fish habitat to help the native species?

Yeah, widen the tributary by the gazebo and put some dams on it so we can fish for trout in the summer time.

I saw some absolute bruiser carp in that area last time I was there. One had to be pushing 30lb w a few solid 20s w it. And they were definately eating too.

Fishinguy that sounds like an ambitious plan.  If the money was available to the club by getting 1000 or more members and raising the dues, maybe the county would consider the plan.  The TLFA helped pay for the weed treatment of the weeds on the wall side of the Lower Lake that a lot of fishermen were  complaining about.

That help had us reduce some of the money available for stocking.

BTW all ideas are good and we also need some help in getting the funds to support these ideas.

I liked the weeds great topwater action by the boat house mid summer. Some people just refuse to fish weedless. Weeds are good for fish populations period. When trout are abundant in spring they're not really a problem and by the time the weeds are real thick its bass time ne way and weeds are where they're at. So I personally never saw a problem w the weeds. How much money do you think would need to be raised for a golden shiner stocking? I don't think it could be too much.

Instead of doing a weed kill every so many years why not stock 1-2 grass carp in the lakes that have weed problems. They eat multiple times there body weight in a day, are sterile if bought from the fish commission. 1-2 fish would probably keep the lake in check without eating all the weeds so the smaller fish could benefit from the cover weed provides. I have fished there twice so far and really enjoyed the atmosphere. I live about 50 minutes away but I will be baack again.

The weeds were a problem for anyone trying to throw trout lures all of last year at Twin & Mammoth, even was tough through the ice. There are still plenty of weeds as we only treated about 30yds along the wall. We have asked the PFC about the Grass Carp several times but they are very reluctant to give us a needed permit to do so. They want us to put up a barrier across the spillway so that the carp can't get in the stream below the lower lake. Also, tho I can't remember how many .they said that it would take several dozen to do the job. This is according to the PFC Bioligist & The guy that supplies them. Also a couple of clubs that stocked them on private lakes said that now there are no weeds & that it is almost impossible to eradicate them without draining the lake. sam

My thoughts on the whole grass carp thing is a biologist will tell you how to get rid of the weeds in terms of how many grass carp it will take to do the job and its a quick goal. If the biologist said 10 grass carp probably stocking 2 would really reduce the weeds year after year but the 2 grass carp would never be able to deplete them all such as 10 could.I guess its not an instant goal but a more long term goal. Even though they are sterile from the commission I guess the whole gate thing makes sense to keep them from going down stream.

That was the idea that we had also(to stock a few),also we were told that you get them from a commercial hatchery, such as Angelo's, not the PFC & they must be certified sterile. The other idea we had was to lower the lake periodicly as that is the cheapest way. From talking to Park officials I can tell you that they already are cutting the budget for next year as in most other places & there will be less money for all projects. We were talking about dredging part of Mammoth, but the cost was very high, therefor I doubt that it will come to pass. sam

One option I found today while looking online other than grass carp is this. Israeli Mirror carp are known for keeping down algae and some weed. Genetically as long as bass and bluegill are in the same lake they supposedly do not spawn from what I have read. They do grow fast so they would also be fun to catch. Prices I saw for them was $5 for 5-6inch fish and $10 for fish 10-12inches. After talking with a few of my carping friends many lakes out east have been using them for this. They don't kill a ton of the weed like a grass carp but help out a lot. Figured I would post it up/

They are open to the public and always looking for new members. Pm the o.p. of this topic. This is a very old thread(2011). They still have the meetings though. And the o.p. usually posts about it on here(sw pa boards)
