Bought one for my kids in a youth model Savage. It seems very flat with a substantial bullet and minimal recoil. Off of a bench with Fusion Ammo it holds groups under an inch at 100, so performance is fine. The downside is the high price tag for the ammo and limited availability at "out of season" time frames. Even in season, there is only so much to go around so locating ammo can be tricky.

One of my favorites deer rifles is my Browning ABolt in 7MM-08.  Compact, low recoil, plenty of power and just a little bit different than what everyone else is carrying.  The Federal Fusions are the ticket out of mine.

308 and 7mm-08 are both ranked very high in the power vs recoil charts. Their designs give great efficiency.

Bought one for my daughter, Browning A-Bolt Micro Medallion, wasn't impressed with factory load performance on whitetail. Hand loading with a lighter ball fixed that though. Hasn't been shot in close to 10 years and I don't remember the specifics of the load, sorry. Daughter decided she didn't want to hunt...

Have a Browning A-Bolt & 700 BDL in the 7mm-08. Out of all my rifles it's my favorite cal. for Whitetail. Wally World had the Rem. ammo for it the other day for $20.

I've used 150 grain Remington core-lokts out of my 308 and the 140 grain 7mm-08 are within 100 ft pounds out to 200 yards.  Never had to shoot twice at a whitetail with mine.  That is the cheapest ammo I have found and it works fine for deer.  My guns shoot it well also.

I had a Savage Model 11L (lefthanded) few years back. I used the 140 grain and it did the job fine, but I decided on trading it in for a lefthanded Browning A-bolt in 30/06 cause I wanted a gun for PA also out West

If your gonna stick to PA, 7mm-08 is a fine gun

I believe it's a 180 gr. for the 308. Snipers in the military use a 168 gr. bullet. The 165 is the closest factory load. I think 180 is too heavy. I shoot 180's out of my 300 Weatherby Mag.

It sits squarley in the middle of the class of cartirdges that are widely considered ideal for deer.

220 grains are also avaliblefor the .308 (30 cal). Although not popular in a deer gun.

Just dropped a 3 point in NY with a Remmington Model 700 7mm.08 Synthetic Stock today. 150 stopped him in his tracks. i love this gun. You will sure fall in love with it if you buy one. I shoot Winchester 140 grain. very flat and fast. low recoil.

These are the best comparisons I could find.

Cartridge (Wb@MV) Bullet BC 100 yds. 200 yds. MPBR (yds.)
    30-30 Win. (150 FP at 2390) .268 +2.9" -0.6" 225
    7mm-08 Rem. (140 BT at 2860) .485 +2.6" +1.9" 285
    .308 Win. (150 BT at 2800) .435 +2.7" +1.7" 275
    30-06 (150 BT at 2910) .435 +2.6" +2.0" 287

    Bullet weight muzzle velocity=wb@mv
    Bullet coefficient= BC
    Maximum point blank range= MPBR

It will be your favorite gun for life. I can't immagine myself shooting any other gun at a deer. such low recoil but so much speed. Dropped 5 deer dead in their tracks with it...Does this gun you bought have a synthetic stock?

Love the Single shot Ruger 06 and have used with great succes for many years with a variety of ammo. My youngest kid bought a Marlin .356 years ago and it is the absolute most effective Deer gun I have ever seen. Loud and kicks and when ya find ammo you better buy a few boxes but is the best lever gun with the greatest smack power I have ever shot.
Read a report where that cal never  really caught on but was developed by Winchester for Sheep hunters shooting from ridge to ridge who needed knockdown power. The gun my  kid got was made by a guy at the Marlin factory here in CT who gave it as a gift to a relative who didnt shoot-kid  got it on the cheap and its presentation grade- somebody didnt know or appreciate what he had.. As I recall he uses bout a 200 grain projectile.

I wish i could tell you but the farthest i have had one go is about 10 yards so i wouldnt have any good info about the blood trails. You're right also, the gun does a ton of damage inside.
