Bear Camp

Who's going and where are you headed? Any special traditions?

Im headed to the banks of Salmon Creek near Kellettville in Forest Co. We have been going there for 6 years now and im glad the forecast looks good since we will be roughing it in tents for 3 possibly 4 days. We head up Thursday night and set up. Friday morning you will find us grouse/turkey hunting on a couple hot spots that have produced in the past. Saturday morning brings the Death Mountain climb in the dark and hopefully a big bruin. I hope the weather holds off Monday so we can extend the weekend 1 more day before heading home.
We will have an orance Welcome Hunters beer sign above our tents, stop down and have a beverage.

I will be right down the road from you on 666. (Balltown) Leaving after work thursday. Gotta be back to work monday as I wont get paid for thursday and friday next week if I miss a day. If my grouse hunting travels lead me to the salmon crick area I'll stop in. Sux that I only get to hunt for 1 day but 1 day is better than no day. I was planning on spending this whole week at camp but with no vacation - no can do.

Traditions? When I get to Tionesta I put on the CD - Allman Bros. "eat a peach" then I usually stop at the hickory nut and have a beer to take the edge off. I'm usually so wound up by that point anyway. Break a 10 and get the dollar coins back as change.

Stop in at Cougars Bob's if you need help getting that bear out of the woods. Plenty of help there but you'll have to buy some rounds.

Shot a few buck years back with a Ruger gp-100 .357. Bought a Smith 629 Classic but never got a chance to hunt with it. Remember if you carry that Ruger under your coat, have your carry permit with you . If outside your coat have your sportsman permit with you or carry permit. You don't want to make any donations to the PGC.

I thought Pa was an open carry state ?????

Did I miss something here ????

I also was told that Jefferson County not longer even has a sportmans permit ???????

Never mind.. I found this in the mean time ==

Is open carry legal in PA?
    Answer: Yes, with some restrictions.

Anyone whom can legally own a firearm in the commonwealth can openly carry, on foot, with the exception of court facilities, federal buildings, motor vehicles and cities of the first class

I see no reason for that reply..

I was simply asking why he had to have a permit to carry the handgun outside his coat while hunting bear .. ... which YOU said he did ??

It's an open carry state and I see no reason he needs anything other than his hunting license to use that hangun.. unless it is something about the gun itself ???..

please explain what I am missing or do not understand about regs and laws in this case ????

    just hear-say .... ????

I could be wrong and maybe I am .. I'll have to ask around ...

Doc, this is from PSP website

Who can apply for a Sportsman’s Firearm Permit?
An individual who is age 18 or older and is licensed to hunt, trap or fish, or who has been issued a permit relating to hunting dogs, may apply for a Sportsman's Firearm Permit by submitting a completed application along with the required fee to the county treasurer's office.  The permit shall be issued immediately and be valid throughout this Commonwealth for a period of five years from the date of issue for any "legal firearm", when carried in conjunction with a valid hunting, furtaking or fishing license, or permit relating to hunting dogs.  The issuances of a Sportsman’s Firearm Permit allows the individual to carry a firearm if such persons are actually hunting, taking furbearers, fishing or training dogs, or are going to the places where they desire to hunt, take furbearers, fish, or train dogs during the regular training season, or returning from such places.   A Sportsman's Firearm Permit is NOT a License to Carry a firearm concealed.

In a nutshell you need a Sportsmans Permit to hunt with a handgun. I got my LTCF through the Sheriff office. Clarion County's treasur issues the Sportsmans Permit, so does the Venango County treasur. Its possible Jefferson wants everyone with LTCF since it legal to hunt and conceal with LTCF

    Straight from the Digest:

Firearms - Handguns: A Sportsman’s Firearms permit or a License to Carry Firearms is required to carry a handgun, or have in a motor vehicle. Licenses to Carry Firearms permits are issued by county sheriffs or the Philadelphia Chief of Police. The License to Carry Firearms permit only entitles bowhunters or spotlighters, for instance, to carry firearms that fall within this classification. County treasurers issue Sportsman’s Firearms Permits. A person holding a Sportsman’s Firearms Permit may not carry a concealed handgun or a loaded handgun in a vehicle, and may not carry a handgun while bowhunting or spotlighting.

I have ALWAYS had a "carry" permit basically from the duties of past jobs requiring a trip (late night) to a bank for a "drop deposit" of daily sales ... so have no true idea of a sportman's permit...

I'm off now to check the digest to see where it written a hunter needs a permit to use a handgun for hunting... I was totally not aware of such a rule..

but I have always said at times a person learns something everyday .. THANK YOU !!!

    so once again == "Houston,I have a problem .....

Once again I see the PGC is setting rules that over ride my Pa constituional rights when it comes to firearms.. and the 2nd amendment ...

just like the one for a carry permit during archery or spotlighting... it ended up the PGC could not over ride my right to carry at those times...

Pa has open carry ... I have a legal handgun... hunting license.. and a bear tag ... why do I have to have some permit too ????

You just don't don't get it do you ?? But yet you will attack OA and call him out as BS. Do you really need me to explain the hunting laws to you or do you think you can figure it out yourself. For someone who is involved in hunting you sure have a lot to learn. BTW it's complete opposite your constitutional rights take priority over the PGC game laws as far as carrying a pistol goes.I also corrected the spelling of constitutional for you as well. Your welcome !
