I could be incorrect, but unless the fish was of legal size you would be breaking the law to have it, or at least the person who would catch it and keep it for you would be breaking the law.

I do not believe (i couldnt find it to be sure) But there is no open seaon for a gar. So having one would be a big No No

With an fish tank as large as yours, I bet you could house a legal 18inch pickeral. You may want to check to see if you would be allowed to do that before actually doing it.

    Better to be safe.

adult grass pickerel only get to be 8-12 inches so you must be talking about chain pickerel and the size on those is as you stated 18 inches which would also be great. id love to have one. the chain would actually suit my tank better

no they cant carry native in pa but they can in ohio. didnt really want to drive to cleveland to get a longnose or shortnose gar. as many gar there are around this area it would be strange that there is no season on them. chain pickerel would be great if anybody catches those

purdy sure Gar are protected in Erie but the 3 Rivers don't have a sz. limit on 'em (to my knowledge) & they are a nuisance a lot ov places. The Grass  Pickerel are more common north/east & north central part ov the state.

Bought a long nose gar fomr a pet shop in Erie years ago and have kept it until it was too big for my tank. Gave it to a freidn who had a bigger tanka nd the fish was doing well last I heard. Feed them minnows or goldfish. If you use shiners you'll get a "snow globe" effect after each on bites the dust...

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.
