Drove across the causeway and it's locked up again. The new ice had no snow on it and was solid black so that's good, let's just hope it holds with 2 days and a night of above freezing temps and rain.

O yeah she has. She was very nice to us last winter then won't even give us a chance to get out this year. It'll be interesting to see what this spring and summer will bring if the temps stay warm like this. If we don't get a good freeze that water will warm up way to much and way to quick to be healthy for the fish

Well ther is still ice, it's 42 and raining with a high of 52 and rain all day. Tonight they are calling for 2+in of snow with 2+ more tomorrow. The ice was covered in water from the rain all night. I'll be going around checking again later to see how it holds up with the rain and temps throughout the day, but I had to take the fiancée to work so I figured I would at least check now to see if it held over night. if you go out anywhere make sure you have the cleats it's real slick from the water and no snow. I tried walking out some, but with no cleats I just about busted my **** a few times so I'll try that again later also.

As long as all this rain, warm temps and wind from today doesn't open it back up we should be alright for a few days of fishing. With temps below freezing for 3 days and 5 nights it will freeze. If it opens up today especially with the winds it's not going to freeze right away. It's like mother nature is testing us to see how much we can deal with. Freezing temps just long enough to lock the lake then warm and rain to open it up again. I'll be heading out to see how much damage the weather did in a couple more hours Just checked accuweather for linesville, it's looking better. I know the weather changes hourly and extended forecasts are never accurate, but tonight is 21 with the next 4 nights being in the teens and the highs in the mid 20's then 5 days with 30's - low 40's for highs but nights below freezing and only Tuesday with rain then back down into the teens for lows and 30's- low 40's for highs again the last 5 days of the forecast. With these next few days of below freezing days and teen nights it'll put the finishing touches on it then the below freezing nights and slightly above days will seal it nicely. It's coming Pymy will be fished through the ice soon! (knock on wood).

Well so far most of the lake held up. Some holes opened but they're small maybe 10-15yds at most. Shorelines especially around runoff areas and creek mouths are opened a lot more. Creeks are high and lots of runoff. The new ice that formed the other day you can tell is real soft but should tighten up with the next few days of freezing.

I don't think I know it won't be good for the weekend. It wide open again. The rain, high temps and the extreme wind we had last night destroyed it. Some of the protected bays and marinas have ice but I doubt they're any good right now. They, the marinas and hidden bays, may be ok with the cold we have right now but other than that it's open. Wind wasn't to bad around noon when I drove over so it may freeze again soon tho. I'll check again tomorrow and friday and let you know then

These are some guidelines I found. I know everybody is chomping at the bit to go. But the fact is you should never venture out on anything under 4" of good clear ice. The weather patterns as of late have been dismal at best. Even if we do get a couple nights of really cold weather it is offset by warmer and windy & rain conditions. So even the stuff that refreezes is not very good. No need to take any unneccessary risks to catch a few fish. I too hope we get an artic blast because we really enjoy hitting the ice. The 10 day forecast doesn't look to good but we will cross our fingers. The guidelines I found are as follows: Learn the thickness safety margins of ice. There are recommended thickness measurements for the safety of ice that you will need to establish to for each activity being undertaken. (N.B. These are recommended, not guaranteed.) Ice begins to be "safe" at around 4 - 6 inches thickness. Do not even walk on ice under 4" or less in thickness. However, even at a 4" - 6" thickness, there may be unforeseen hazards such as a flowing current underneath that is ceaselessly weakening the underside of the ice. In this instance, even the thickness is not a good indicator of safety, as the ice could collapse at any time. In general, the rules for ice thickness measurements are: 3" (7 cm) (new ice) - KEEP OFF 4" (10 cm) - suitable for ice fishing, cross-country skiing and walking (approx. 200 pounds) 5" (12 cm) - suitable for a single snowmobile or ATV (approx. 800 pounds) 8" - 12" (20 - 30 cm) - suitable for one car, group of people (approx. 1500 - 2000 pounds) 12" - 15" (30 - 38 cm) - suitable for a light pickup truck or a van

Safe ice is the number one consideration. A minimum of three to four inches of solid ice is the general rule for safety. Ice thickness, however, is not uniform on any body of water. The guidelines presented here are based on clear, blue, hard ice on non-running waters. Remember, your own good judgement is essential! The American Pulpwood Association has developed a table for judging the relative safety of ice on lakes and streams. This is just a guide; use your own good judgement before going out on any ice. Avoid areas of moving water, including where streams enter the lake, and around spillways and dams. Ice Thickness Table Ice Thickness Permissible Load 2 inches one person on foot 3 inches group in single file 7.5 inches one car (2 tons) 8 inches light truck (2.5 tons) 10 inches truck (3.5 tons) 12 inches heavy truck (7-8 tons) 15 inches 10 tons 20 inches 25 tons Note: This guide is based on clear, blue, hard ice on non-running waters. Slush ice is about 50 percent weaker. Clear, blue ice over running water is about 20 percent weaker. Many ice anglers do not like to fish on less than five inches of ice, and do not like to drive a pick-up truck on less than 15 inches of ice. Use common sense! Be cautious in areas where "bubblers" are used to protect docks. They can produce thin, unsafe ice some distance away. Be especially alert in areas near shore, over moving bodies of water and on lakes and ponds where streams enter or exit. Remember, use the buddy system while ice fishing - it save lives

ORIGINAL: eyeassassin HEY FROST thanks for all the updates you have been giving us. it means alot. Like I said before its no problem with me living 5 mins from the lake. This site was helpful when I lived in Pittsburgh so I didn't make a trip up for nothing so I'm just returning the favor now that I live here. Especially with gas the way it is I would hate to see people driving for nothing.

In 2005 (I think) I had to head WAY north the first week in Feb. to find fishable ice. This is nothing new...just annoying.

Yeah if this keeps up I'm going to launch the kayak and use the ice rods so they don't feel left out. Then I'm going to use the floating life rings and set the tip ups through them. It's still 5 devices seeing I'm using ice gear on open water right?

Definitely.

Frost, I was thinkin along the same lines- put my 12' boat in, take a innertube along, tie it to the side of by boat, drop transducer for the Marcum down middle of tube, and jig with my ice rod! Think it'll work?

Ok we're thinking one person fishing here I want to go out with a group, so we get a pontoon open up a 6 man ice shack drill holes through the floor and we can go as a group. Safety in numbers while "ice" fishing. Ok you might be a crazy if... you start thinking of ways to use your ice gear on open water because it's middle of January and there is no ice yet. Anyhow, I'll be checking here in about an hour and will update everyone. And cold i got those video glasses for a reason! You know I will YouTube that when I do it. I'm thinking with the weather they're calling for if the lakes stay open and we get a light or a south wind I'm going to take the fly rod out for some like in the shallows out of the yak.
