Nov 5 and 6

It seems like the  board has slowed down a bit so I will give my details.  Went up Saturday and it seemed slow all around. I talked to a few folks and  a few were taken on beads and egg sacs.  A guy showed me a 12 lb brown in his cooler.  Said he got it up from the tressle.  I fished with my spin rod and egg sacs and got 1 hit in an hour, then realized my foot was cold and wet and went home to patch my boot.   Went up today and I saw many fish taken, some up to 15lb or so.  Most were taken on egg sacs.   I actually got 2 fish on my fly rod today, but landed neither, one was because a faulty knot and it was my bad.   Got my hits on a little stone fly with a bead pegged above.  I think they hit the bead because both times the bead was down by the hook and not pegged above.   I fished from Orwell brook head down to the first big bend past the tressle.   All fish I saw taken were on that bend. Good fishing till about 13:00 or so and then it slowed down.  Better day all around and nice weather to boot.

Why not? I make the choice not to eat these fish--but I'm sure not gonna tell others how to live.

....and if not enough fish aren't taken out of the system(while stockings remain the same)---there's potential for a bait crash and the resulting SMALLER fish.

Salmo feel free to delete this if it is offensive since it was enough to get me banned from another site for suggesting that the lower number of kings stocked after the low water year might be a good thing.
I'm hearing from several guides and seeing pictures of some brutish steel this year.
Maybe fewer eating machines in the big lake ain't a bad thing.

Then there's the question of how much predation the browns do on the steel and salmon.
But mostly, Metal said it for me. Which store has the largest revenue, pays more taxes and adds more to the economy?  I'd guess Fat Nancy's.  5 minute photo sessions after a nice rocky landing and a dropping out of the net or 2 doesn't take a toll either?

    Nice report Clint..
I like reading reports like yours - post tour-on season when the #'s hooked/lined don't have any zero's behind them. Doesn't make me shake my head and say "yea-rigghhttt" as I read...

I'm curious about your fly/bead setup and why you use it. I've never pegged a bead above a bare hook when fishing up there, never mind above a fly. (I use beads for ice fishing now & then).

My understanding is that the fish hit the pegged bead, the bare hook gets them.
In my simple mind, the fly should do the same thing.

Were you slow on the hookset trigger (blame yourself) or do you thik the fly interfered with deep hookset?

why would somebody put a 12 lb brown in a cooler? Take a picture and let it go.

Because the cooler was big enough.

Ever try chopping a 12lb brown in pieces small enough to fit in a Lil Playmate?

Gotta agree with Drake to some degree here. Hate any kinda bare hook thing- just doesnt set straight with me- to each his own- they use the rig cause it works so well I guess --so I went out and bought a buncha large egg flies. Figure if they are gonna hit a bare bead they oughta hit those fluffy eggie thingies too-hope hope hope.
Maybe if the weather ever gets to some degree of civility round here I can get back up to the SR this year and use them.

I don't care about the bare hook thing with beads, RT.

I wouldn't care if someone swung a Michigan Cricket - ain't my prob, I ain't The Man, and I ain't callin the Man via the 1-800-RATLINE,,

I'm a couple years behind with the fad thang, pink worms still work..

a few micro jigs under a float work also.

I'm a minimalist gearhead anymore, I ain't carrying a case full of "custom beads" around with me like some of the OCD rivatards do - reminds me of when we were kids with those carrying cases for the miniature Hotwheels cars.

I am an extreme novice at steel fishing and fly fishing in general that is why I missed the hook ups.   I though I had a snag on 2 of them.   One I played for a bit and the knot broke it was my bad on that as I knew the knot was questional, yanked on it with needle nose and it held, but it must have been weak.

As far as the bead I saw so many taken on beads I figured what the heck it cant hurt to peg one above a fly.  The fly's were tied by me so anything to increase the odds I am al for it.

many cry about the bare hook issue; but i will personnally say that most trout hooked with beeds are smacking them... hard too; clint: if your beed was pulled down than i would say that you for sure had that fish strike and not lined...

Just did a trip to Lake Placid for a Hockey tournament. Went into the Jones Outfitters Orvis shop. looked around and saw nothing that drew my eye or caaght my attention except a book on yellow labs. didn't buy it though.

Went up the street to the "Bead it Shop" my wife couldn't drag me out. baught $5.00 worth.

and you probably purchased a lifetime supply, - vs- buying them in a fishing tackle shop.
