Where to begin custom rod building

I have been thinking about getting a 2-3 wt fly rod for next spring and thought maybe I would just build one instead. I know some of you guys have a ton of experience in rod building and wondered where is a good place to start. Any good books, websites, building suppliers etc that I may find helpful in acquiring the knowledge and parts. I am just starting to look into it since I would like to wait until the cold erie winter sets in to build it.

    www.rodbuilding.org

    www.rodbuildingforum.com

    www.mudhole.com

These are good ones to start.  I have a few cheap blanks I got at a discount if you want one to screw around on let me know.   I have a wrapper I can send you as well ONLY IF you promise to send it back when you are done with it.

As far as videos go, I have some DVD's I don't watch anymore.  PM me your address and ill send those to you as well.

If you want some good internet media Batson Enterprises has a great forum and rod building video section there as well, something to check out if you're bored.

You are right, building is not hard.

Doing it right so that other experienced builders say it looks good, different story    Finish is by far the hardest thing to get good at...patience is the biggest virtue though.

I have found applying finish with a brush and without the use of a drying motor is the best way to get a nice, level finish. Also, I use three coats of lite to do my stuff. Three chances to screw up! Bubbles are most unsightly, heat, and most important, your mixing process. It's pretty rare these days I get a bubble in my mix, some breath or heat takes care of that.
