cleat question

hey guys , I  have always gone to the SR in the cold winter months and  use 5 MM boot foot waders  with  River claws ( which I  have permenantly mounted to  the boot ) ,  and really like that setup for the bitter cold.
This year I am heading up next week and  I am going to  try  my breathable stocking foot  with wading shoes that are designed to accept screws for  traction.  Has anyone tried  this type of setup ?  Do the screws really work?  they seem so small ?   I am bringing the heavyweight waders  just incase.

Thanks
Cape

Don't know the screws you are talking about but the tips of the carbide studs on corkers are pretty small and they work.

I have korker wading boots and love them, the screws that go in your boots are the same idea. I think the screws provide more bite when new but you will need to check and change depending on use. That reminds me I looked at the bottom of mine and have 3 missing on my right boot, time for some maintence.

Screws in bottom of boots work just fine, used that system for several years.

    cape,

I think the screws you are talking about are either the stock ones that come with the wading shoes or stainless steel screws from a

hardware store. They both work, I replace all my stock ones with the SS ones as they are much cheaper, a bit of waterproof epoxy on the

screw as you screw it in also helps keep them in place longer. Your setup is fine, but I do not think you get the same traction as if you

would if you wore korker cleats(sandals) vs studded wading shoes. I wear the korkers year 'round and replace the studs frequently, either with

the old fashioned screw in golf spike, which seem to work the best of anything I've tried, they have a hard wide base and last a while,

but tough to find these days, as most golf shoes are now soft spikes.

Anyway best of luck to ya,

    Tight Lines

I picked up a pair of the Simms wading boots with the vibram aquastealth (rubber) soles about eight years ago and forgot about them.  After reading a number of articles about how effective they were with with the Simms carbide studs I decided to give it a try.  They worked beyond my wildest expectations.  It was a pleasure to walk and wade with these boots and a lot lighter than wearing those God awful (heavy) Korkers sandals.  Hope this helps.

Those should be plenty. I use them on rubber soled bootfoots and wading boots and have had excellent traction on the SR and elsewhere.

Try Kold Kutters. They are spikes for ice racing motorcycles. I think I paid $15.00 for 250 on line. They look like the same as you have and are better than regular hex screws as they have concave heads that provide sharp edges. Cheap enough to replace every trip.

Cape, I think they will work fine.. Be careful about addig too many.. It's all about placement not amount of screws added.. There is such a thing as too many as they will become more of a skate.. You need to have grip traction as well and your boots look fine..
