top 5 choices on the SR/tribs for chrome

So my one buddy and I were sort of arguing over the effectiveness of live worms/minnows on the SR and surrounding tribs for chrome.  I thought that this might be a topic to cover as people start to transition to steelhead and browns.
I suspect that this topic has been covered but why not rehash, so what are your go to baits, beads, lures, or flies (consider adding colors, sizes, cured, fresh, blue goo, etc. the more detail the better if you are comfortable doing such)

1. Fresh skein
2. Cured egg sacs with blue mesh
3. Pink worms (power bait kind)

Plan to try getting back to fly fishing and based on my reading looks like I will be trying blue, orange, and chart estaz, and brown, black, and white wolly buggers.

Please feel free to address the concept of worms/minnows on the SR.

tan beads? when did they come into fashion BB?

Live bait worms are often used during the spring dropback season with great success. I don't know why they would not work in the fall - noone seems to use them then- might be worth a shot since it will be something different.
I have never seen anyone fishing minnows in the river - not even guides, have no idea why not.

Pink worms - I have no clue why they work - especially in the winter months - but they do.

Wooley buggers and egg sucking leaches are my top choices for late fall - winter.

Once winter starts - include natural color stoneflies in your fly arsenal - the snowbanks along the SR are often littered with them.

they are a light tan with almost a pink tint to them or the other ones kind of look like a killdear egg...i bleached and painted them myself so they are not "in fashion" but they do work well
    prismatic ones also work

worms do work ok in the fall

never tried minnows either and have always wondered why no one uses them?

Hey big bear I have had much success on tan beads also; be it transparent or translucent...

I have thought about live minnows down low under a bobbed this year; I can't see how they wouldn't work either

Pink worms; I've destroyed fish on them; I also did well on large /smalltranslucent mouths on pink yamoto worms this year as well... I happened to notice that they actually resemble the pinkish tones of a night crawler when in colored/green water... exaggerated of course though...

Flies; id say any mentioned are good... presentation in specific water types is just as important though.. good luck...

Yeah my buddy said he's bringing worms up, I think I will keep to egg sacs with the spinning rod and obviously flies (egg patterns and streamers) with the fly rod.
I will probably try the much hated beads and probably get some of those blue goo egg sacs.  Does fat nancy carry them, I know some were saying that certain shops are better???

Many years ago I used live shiners under a float in early May late April, caught some Steel on them but it's a pain carrying a minnow bucket.
Also used worms in fall and spring, the Steel like them.
But now in my golden years I am almost always using flies, all kinds and colors and sizes on any given day.
Does anyone remember the floating jig heads? At one time they were the hot item of the day,no one talks about them anymore but they were deadly in the deep fast runs.I still have some of them and am thinking of bringing them with me next trip just for old time sake.

Actually my buddy just called, he's getting 100 night crawlers and 100 garden worms.  Seems like a bit of overkill, who knows maybe I will be asking for some by the end of the trip...

    Again I appreciate the comments.

Hey jack I know guys who still use the jig heads in oswego for the browns and rainbows; I've seen browns brake water on them while reeling them up out of 14' of water off of wall areas on oswego.. they do still work...

I spent many a day on the "wall" drifting those jigheads, caught everything on them..steel..browns...salmon...lakers.That was a few years ago,I don't go there anymore as I refer to it as the "land of the MUNTANTS".

Looooove Garden Hackle in the Spring- cant figure out why its so darned unlucky in the late fall though
.Reminds me of my dopy minnow experiment day last Fall. Might try them again this Spring -along with the hackle.

RT,if the hatch is eggs that is what they zero in on,get some high off color water with worms washing into the river then they zero in on that. You gotta match the hatch!

Agree- In the Spring with NO eggs around they hit natural stuff more readily. Tried drifting Hackle a lot in Fall with no results. Cept for little browns much later on.
Gotta wonder bout it sometimes though . As a true blue  bait guy I just gotta try them now and again.

Well I'm sticking to estaz, glo bugs, egg sacks, maybe even the controversial beads.  Will fish the pink worms wacky style as well...  Caught two last year on that crazy power bait worm.
I will report whether or not the live worms kicked butt or NOT.........
Heading up thursday, hope the rain didn't muddy up the SR and tribs.  I certainly don't mind the extra water but want to keep the clarity.

I'm surprised the leaf hatch remarks seem low?  Would have thought that wind would have created some problems.

Leaf hatch has started. Saturday was prettya heavy whileenough sunday wasntmorning as bad...but the oaks and maples are still holding many leaves.... also; if the water stays down while all of the leaves fall there will be an extended leaf hatch once the water comes up and washes off the banks...

Good luck with your trip machine...
