best GPS app for stoopid "smart" phone???

I've tried several free apps for my android and I'm not satisfied with any.  They all seem to need the phone signal for certain functions, and that's just not possible in most of my outdoor situations, whether it be on land or water.  I'm to the point where I'm ready to even spend $ on one, but don't want to waste $.

What are the better apps (free is best) ????
- does it have topography, or just road mapping?
- does it work with satellite imagery?
- do all features work independently without phone signals?
- does it have trail-tracking?
- how many way-points?
- anything else I should be concerned with???

I'm fairly new to GPS use, but experienced enough to be fed up with not being able to mark points in the dark without a phone signal.

I downloaded the navionics app for my iphone and as long as you download the map while you have a wifi connection your good. Only thing is for it to work in realtime you have to have at least 3gs. The app is great for all the lakes I fish it shows contours of the lake and are very detailed.

I don't know of any cell phone that will work as a gps without signal from tower or wifi no matter what app you use.
They will all be a disappointment for what you are trying to use it for
