Wader, Kudos for pulling out trash. I do the same, just like my Dad taught me -if it doesn't belong pick it up. Just a shame it is so easy to fill a bag.

any stimulation of the economy helps the local economy
even if a building owner is from out of town they pay taxes, buy things and services to up-keep the building and more than likely hire local people to run those shops/bars/ restaraunts....so why does it matter if they are locals or not?

i find most of the local people to be friendly, helpful and just plain nice...so much so that i have thought about retiring in that area
but then again i treat them with respect and in a friendly way

I agree with you 100% on that. Attitude is a major factor on how you treat people and the respect you get back. When in Rome... Don't rock the boat...Not directed at anyone either!

However, some people will never accept anyone from anywhere else unless they have their name on the Mayflower passenger list.

Great point most all of our ancestors are from' someplace else' -just depends on how far back ya wanna go. I got some that were here when the Pilgrims got here. But where did their ancestors  come from?
In regard to the Pulaski business folks=- hey- if somebody wants to go to a place and make an investment of time and money -- go for it. Location  location.

RE: Locals 2011/10/16 22:05:26 (permalink)
Welll I look at it like this- I'm kinda local up there too- bought a place where one could live year round forever if ya wanted to and pay my taxes- actually drive up so much year round that I cut my lawn more frequently than  some others around. Put time effort and money into it too.
Am I local -guess not cause I dont vote there or register my cars there- but if  I did those 2 things and still drove back and forth every other week would I be local??
If that business guy builds or buys or rents a place of business and puts his savings into a venture there and hires 'local' help -pays his taxes and moves in, for a part of the year at least, and depends on that area to  become a suces what is he??. Santa??? or just some guy who stopped by.
We commonly talk bout Jim R  here as an Icon of the area- but you may not recall that Jim came from here in Ct not far from where I reside and moved up there to be in business. Then sold out and moved on - Good business ( still there ) good guy too. -and he loved the place--Local????
How many generations does it take to be 'local. Think its more of a state of mind combined with some sencse of responsibility to the place in question.
Just to make the point out LOCAL Mayor here in Ct came from bout an hour West of Pulaski.

i hear ya RT; and i dont look at any out of towners who move up there to make a living as people "cashing in" for the wrong reasons or anything like that... most i see arent really cashing in but making a nice living if they work at it; i more or less see it as them doing what they want to do and thats what its all about... the word "local"????... who cares...

just live life and be happy; and no matter where you go in life everyone will consider you a local...

Yes I recall Jim being a golf pro from Ct.
I met him on the river before he and Marna bought the store.
I used to be allowed to sleep in the back room on my foam mattress and sleeping bag when rooms up there were full.
I know them pretty well.

No they were never locals as the selling of the store and moving on proved. They had no real ties to the area.

There is nothing wrong with that.
I never said there is anything wrong with that.
But locals have family and history in an area.
Something that ties them to the place other than profit motive.

You can become a Local only when, fishing the river is number 10 or more on your list of things to do for the day.

I only burn mines, whens I want to see the bug spray cans explode, and I do it next to the stream where my boy catches trout, so I cans put the fire out with buckets, whens it gets to high in the air.

Pulaski is a horrible place to stay if youre a visitor fishing....I recommend staying in Syracuse and making the commute.

well I have stayed in various places in Pulaski for 30 years, some good, some bad & a few down right UGLY..
When the wife goes she wants comfort and something to do so we usually stay in Oswego at best western. Steamers is right next door and a pretty good bar..

Next week I'll be staying in Syracuse for the first time all week making the commute. Not by choice but by default as I have a free hotel.
I'll let you know my thoughts on that next friday..

hey tuna, back in my gigging days we were playing a show in utica and ended up staying in syracuse since utica was pretty dead (for the young punks my friends and i were)...

we had a blast... not saying you will though; your fun will be on the river for sure...

there are a lot of bars though if you want to cut loose for a bit...

PULASKI: i never thought or think pulaski sucks; i gues its all a matter of preference and expectation... i personally always liked it from many years back even when i was young... memories of telling stories after a long day of fishing; walking to the old log cabin from the fish on motel on a cold january night... great times have been had there for me...

now; i prefer the more rural side of albion/altmar and surrounding areas... especially in the summer when its light out til passed 10 pm and everything quiets down right aorund 10;30... i have a place on rt, 13 and in the summer time at night it is far from busy... sometimes up to an hour with no car passing by... great people and great neighbors... nothing bad for me to highlight about the region... but thats just my take on it...

A must while in Syracuse is the Dinosaur Barbecue, great food and great music in a friendly, Harley-friendly atmosphere. The original, since expanded to Rochester, Harlem (#1 'cue joint in NYC), and most recently Troy, but the Syracuse shop is the first.

Good rib jointa are hard to find.

Bear - you make a special stop during your long commute to/from the river?

Funny thing - except for interstates thru the Cuse (81 - most times via 481 loop), I have never been on a Syracuse city street. Nothing against Syracuse - but I am usually just blowing by the place and only thing in my mind is my destination whether it be N or S.

The only time I pulled over near Cuse was on I81 Northbound - to take a pic of the Native American Billboard that welcomed pale-faced tourons... (I always got a kick out of that sign).

Poor little thing.
BOOHOO you're too stupid to know the rules.
That's your problem not mine.

When you get called out about it you react like a little girl.
Again your problem not mine.

You try to insult me by calling me the popo so I contact the board owner and HE deletes ALL YOUR SPAM.
Gee once again your problem not mine.

Welcome back your vast knowledge and input is appreciated for what its worth.

Hey folks, I'm no stranger to Cuse.. seen the dead at carrier dome been to Lowe's theater, the pines theater and raced at the moody mile along with a bunch of other side trips through that "city"..
The dinosaur is a great pub, as I call them , for sure and know many dive bars in town too.. This will however be my first commute from there to Pulaski.. The trek is what I'm wondering, is it really worth the gas ? Not so sure bout that.. But hell it's a free week at a top notch hotel with meals stay so I won't complain..

Thanks for Clarification Metal.

I was trying to be PC (not to ruffle any feathers - that's the way I roll )

But, since you brought it up, that is why I take the 481 loop, to avoid looking at the inner guts of the concrete jungle $hithole...

The worst of the city is beyond sight from 81; and yes its pretty frickin bad... I don't go as far as taking 481out though; 481 adds a decent amount of time to the trip; besides, Syracuse has nothing on some of the garden state cities I work in or drive through sometimes...lol

DB - 481 adds an extra 2 miles to my odometer.

Another reason I avoid 81 thru center city is because I don't enjoy driving on elevated winding curving highways covered with black ice, way too many nitwits on that stretch - even on a bright sunny day.

55mph relaxing ride on 481 loop - back on 81 above/below the circus is good for me.
