20 Mile Posted Land

Is the land from Route 5 upstream a 1/2 mile or so still posted? I saw several guys walking past the area on the stream where the wire was hanging across it last year. Isn't this land owned by a club or guide?

I just want to see anyone get jammed up.

As Skip said yes its posted but you will see the private club memebers fish public waters first and then go up to fish on the private property. I see them above the posted property all the time.

i've had people try to run me out from under the route 5 bridge claiming that it was owned by the club

i've also watched a whole flock of eastern europeans( don't speak russian so not sure of origin) walk up to the little step just up stream, snag about 50 fish, pull a pick up over and load them all up....without being said boo to except for me and of course the 4 of them were not interested in anything i said

I think the fine would depend on different factors, there isn't a single number you can put on it.  Depends on things like the offender and whether they have had prior offenses or not,  the attitude of the offender when the fine is being given, and the mood of the person issuing the fine.

Why don't the fish comm. just quit stocking 20 mile for a few yrs. and see what happens. It is a shame that our dollars are supporting Don Beavers private fishing.

I used to fish that section alot prior to it being posted. (it has been posted since 2004) Upstream from the falls to where the upper wire is really isn't that good. There are two good holding areas that might hold 20 or 25 fish each. The better upstream areas (other than the Snake Hole) are all open to the public. I'm not going to sugarcoat it though with the area from the bridge to the falls. It is a really good area, probably equivilant to Manchester hole on Walnut Creek. Although I despise Beaver and his club exploiting the resource and would fully support a punitive tax on his business, we have to be honest with ourselves and admit that ever since the area from the falls to the bridge was posted, there have been FAR FAR greater numbers of fish in the upstream waters of 20 mile creek. I remember days back in the late 90's when we would walk from RT 5 all the way up to RT 90 and might have encountered 30 or 40 fish total above the falls. The numbers simply weren't there like they are today. SOME of that has to be credited to the fact that the fish aren't getting pummeled like they used to below the falls when the area was open to the public. Suggesting the fish commission not stock 20 mile creek to me really isn't a solution given the vast majority of the 4 miles of stream found in PA are still open to the public. The two areas off limits might be slightly over 1/2 mile in total length.

So true livin.  Fish seem to spread out better since that area was posted.  Fished above there the first year it was posted and was amazed to find more fish earlier in the season above that posted section.

Ugh you might want to check the stocking numbers before you draw that conclusion.I think they were increased about that time.

Problem I have is that the upper wire seams to move south every year without just cause.
And, the PAFBC will not pony up and just out compete him for property easements.

The wire is as high as Dohler can take it for them. Thats all the property that she owns and they're using it to the fullest. As for posted property on 20 mile dont forget that from rt. 20 south it is posted unless you have home owner permission. I see a lot of guys park at the tressel and if you read the signs it is POSTED as well. I was asked by the landowner last year to turn in anyone that was down there with out his permission.

Looks like the number of steelhead stocked in 20 mile went from 20,000 in 2002 to 100,000 in 2003, and then increased again to 150,000 in 2004.  Increased numbers of fish in the upper sections probably had nothing to do with posting.

What is the deed says in these posted areas? Do they own bank or riverbed as well? Nowbody in US can have water in private posession. If they do not own the riverbed, you can wade anytime you want in the river or lake from public to private areas. Just a thought.

It has to be deemed a navigable river which 20 mile is not.
