Egg curing recipes

I will admit that for years I have used the pre made container mixes and they work great. This year would like to try another way and used to have a recipe using borax I got from an old timer, looked all over and cant locate it, looked on the web and didnt see anything I wanted to try. So does anyone have a non-top secret recipe that they use that they may want to share, Ill keep looking for mine and post it when I find it.

Last 2 yrs have been using straight salt cure--I do it right on the river--water harden em for 15min then into a bucket, add salt(kosher non-iodized) till no more will disolve--let stand for at least an hr or 2--the amt of time will depend on how hard u like em--rinse in river water and I dry em on a screen for at least a few hrs(again depends on how hard u like em)--into a ziplock bag and I put em in the crisper(wife loves that--lol).

you can get borax in any grocery store
20 mule team borax laundry detergent

i cure mine like metal does
but before i dry them i roll them in a kool aid powder to give them color (not all of them, just the ones i want to have died)

then usually i tie egg sacks with them

no wife to worry about in my fridge...so its all good

btw, i always keep them in glass jars

I know a few guys who do a straight cold water cure.... you need a lot of free time on your hands to stick to that one .... that is free time to fish that much... ref; everything you said are great points; I don't think it has to be that specific; but yes; there are that many ways to skin a cat when it comes down to it... I've found almost any cure method works with eggs.... eggs work well; bottom line... tight lines...

I don't like to do more than rinse eggs in the coldest water until all blood and debris is gone.
The longer in water the more they milk out before they are being fished in my mind.

    Drake
    Cut them to size .
    Apply to egg loop.

Or cover them with borax, wait a few minutes and then open each row of eggs and cover them with borax.
Be sure all sides of all the eggs get a covering.
Put them in a glass bowl like a casserole dish.
    They will milk.
You can either wait for them to soak there own juice back in.
Then put on paper towel, not newspaper because of the ink, and allow to dry in a cool place.
Or dump half the juice and cover the eggs with light carro syrup.
Depending on how much syrup you let osmose into the eggs they can be soft and gooie or like hard candy looking shrivled.
Both work depending on how and where fished.

    Thanks Wader & Ref.

I have not used many eggs or skein in recent years, but I will bank the info you folks provided.

in the past I used simplistic caveman techniques:

chop skein in small chunks (enough for a couple dozen sacks) without cure and frose them in ziplocks.
I use sack mesh for both eggs and skein (no skein loops).
I found that twisting up sacks when skein is still partially frozen is not as messy.

If I used eggs or skein more often, I would go your route instead of buying them.
But I don't fish Salmon River country as often as you gents.

I really don't fish eggs at all.
My info is decades old but it will still work.

I do remember that skein wrapped in bag form had a tendency to let the membrane cover the hook point making for a lot of on off hook ups.
Try a bait hook with a barb on the shank to keep the bag as far away as possible.

I believe mustard makes an egg hook with a single barb up near the eye to keep the bag up from causing on offs as wader said. Id reccomend that over a normal bait holder...

not much to add that has not been said.. These are the two methods I have used when curing eggs years ago. Now I just tie an egg fly..

    Water harden cure:
eggs should be rinsed of all blood & cold water hardened asap: I'd suggest washing in sink under cold water to remove blood then let sit in a bowl of cold water from 15 to 30 mins to water harden them.. Then put on paper towel to drain water and pat dry the eggs or skein.. Let dry for aprox another 15 min. At that point they will be water harden cured..
They can be stored in a fridge for about 3 months or frozen..

If using 20 Mule Team Borax :
Always wash and rinse blood off first then place on paper towel and pat dry. Borox will "draw" water away from the eggs and give them a silky finish hardening the egg.. Sprinkle the eggs with borax then shake the excess moist borax off and repeat until the borox no longer absorbs water.. At that point the cure is complete ..
If you freeze them then when they thaw the borax will again collect water and should be pat dried or left out to slightly air dry again..

You can also add kool-aid as suggested to give another tint color to them. Years ago we would buy "red hot" eggs from the Smokehouse (now Malinda's) that were dyed red and worked well so experiment..

If you just chuck raw uncured eggs in the freezer you end up with a gooey mess as the Ice crystals penetrate the soft membrane..
At the very least let them sit in cold water for 30 mins. to harden them and air dry them first..

    P.S.
mustad makes a very nice size # 8 egg hook with a barb slice in shank.. Be very careful when buying hooks as all do not have that slice and your eggs will just slide down to the point exposing alot of the hook..

Ref; I know a few guys who swear by the cold water cure; but they fish on the daily; therefore they can tie eggs as they need them and not have to worry about eggs going bad since they use sometimes sacs by thethe dozens a day.... and yes they milk much and quickly; that's why they do it that way.... the only way to get longevity with a cold water cure is to add some type of curing agent be it borax; salt;sugar/brown sugar; or any story bought brands out there...

It sounds like metal slayers quick salt cure would be the next step up from a cold water only cure...

Well I cheesed out and bought a new bottled cure made by atlas called bright & tight. I like the cure the eggs are perfect for sacks but the smell kinda bothers me. This stuff you dump on your clean eggs and leave them in the fridge till your ready to tie them up. Once they cure they are not suppose to get any firmer just hold. I bought pink and it gives them a nice color also, going back for more to cure with borax, for the more natural color.

Another guy I know gave me his cure and its just plain sugar and cold water, never heard of it but might give that one a try to. Basically mix sugar and cold water let it dissolve a bit then dump clean loose eggs in and back in the fridge for a few days and ready to use, leave them in the water sugar mix till you tie them up. Think Im gonna do them 5 or 6 different ways and see how they all produce.

Hey 3; make sure you fish the cold watersugar cured eggs first because they probably wont have a long shelf life; don't be afraid to mix food dye with any experimental batch you try... have fun

I don't use bait now but I did for 30 years
    Do the skein with borax
If you have loose eggs, don't treat them, raw eggs outfish treated by a mile
Harden the raw eggs in cold [well] water, maybe 5 minutes max
Pack eggs in baby food jars, wrap jars with saran wrap, freeze
1 jar ties about 100 bags, I used jars that were in the freezer 5 years and the eggs were fine
You can always fish with raw eggs

If you are still going to treat the eggs,Procure is probably the best
