Id have to say yes and no it all depends on pressure and water clarity; along with area of the river you're targeting... example 1: if I were dishing the upper river for steel with 8 lb. And not hooking up; I would step it down to #6that and see if that works as well as switching patterns/colors.

Example 2: if I was fishing 8# line and hooking up a lot I would definitely bump it to 10#... also if fishing the lower river this time of year I would start with 10#

One mire suggestion; with the water level/clarity coming in to play with current conditions; I would suggest a clear/ translucent leader and butt material... hope this helps and good luck... let us know how you make out...

No it's not too light...you never want your tippet on that type of setup to be the same as your main line, or heavier.

you could do 10 or 12 lb main for salmon and then 6-8 lb tippet...also depends on the type of tippet material..if you use Maxima ultragreen in 8 lb, there is not much that will break that off if the fish is hooked in the mouth...want you want to avoid is foul hooking a fish and having heavy tippet on, that you cannot break off, or you then looses everything in a big snap.

Right now I would go with the 12 lb main and 8 lb tippet for salmon, shchage that setup in another month to 10lb and 6/8lb
