Early Oct. report
Well the past week was really a mixed bag.....Had some nice cold mornings, some rain, and then some 60 degree days. Fished all over the river, but mostly stayed away from the crowds. Fished below Pulaski and had a few hours some evenings with only a few around, mid-day was the best time for finding quiet water. Mid river was the least crowded but also had to work the hardest to find/or wait for fish to move thru. Some areas that I fished had nothing going on, then moved up river and found fish. This time of year, if your not finding fish within an hour or so then move, they are migratory and they are moving, mostly up. Did have one afternoon in the UFZ with only a few guy's around and hundreds of fish. All Kings and Coho's this trip, only had 2-3 steelies on. I did not fish the most popular areas, which is fine by me, plenty of fish around in other areas, just keep your expectations real and you'll have fun, but do stay away from the zooholes. pretty Coho up river [image]local://5886/54398B92B4854A5C8AB3A8D498961DDF.jpg[/image]

3fan, Landed two small wild browns.....but also had the Brown of a lifetime on below the Staircase...Was fishing the fast water tailout with a size 10 cream colored dubbed beadhead fly...saw a big bronze flash between casts and knew there was a nice brown around, cast upriver and across and seconds after my fly hit the water there was a big swirl, splash and a King sized Brown came half out of the water and ate my fly. I could'nt believe it was not a King, all colored up and big..fought hard, stayed in the fast water and then hunkered down...eventually it got behind a rock and buried its nose in and then ping...snapped my tippet... It was fun and my heart was racing...probably pushing that 20lb mark. Oh well...there will be more... Tight Lines

Stories like that are the reason I run up there and fish, sometimes only for two hours. The salmon river can give great memories and then days nothing at all, just got to cast a line and find out what day its gonna be, again great story.

Great pics and great brown story! Had my heart racing. Next time... I haven't got one bigger than 8 lbs., I'd like to change that. Charlie

Hard to tell in some of those pics but it appears there is a lack of an adipose on some of those kings.

Yep WB, many of the Kings the past week had no adipose, or one that looks like it was cut then grew back smalle, which seems to be the case many times. I was looking at some pictures from 4-5 years back, and longer, as well as at some of my mounts, all had good sized adipose fins intact. Not sure of how long these fins, or when/if these fins were being clipped in the past. Tight Lines

This would be the first year class that was supposed to be 100% clipped.

A-OK!! The day after I went from the long bridge to just above the Black Hole, pulled out cause all I saw were salmon and went to the upper zone(hadn't been there since the second year it was open. Not much of my kind of water there but I wanted to see if that changed with the flooding, went down to just above the Paradise which was elbows to azzholes so I bolted and went down below Pineville to just above the mouth of Nonamegiven trib. Burn some rubber and wore down some sheet metal screws. Just nice knowing I'm not restricted to the lfz anymore. Looking for chrome and finding nothing but kings.

Well you blazed some trails...I really have not hit any chrome to speak of since mid-sept when I had a nice day of all chrome. There in the lower river according to dsr, but they do spread out pretty thin once they leave the black hole. Maybe early Nov. we can meet up one day on the SR and hunt chrome since your so mobile......didn't you fish any of the class lll water in the UFZ

There was a group of 4 at the junction below the dam. They had regular hookups with many incredible leaping kings. I moved 50-60 yards down to where the water widened and flattened a bit. There were salmon there but no jumpers for me. Moved down to the rip rap pool which had a guy 2/4 the way to the tail. I tried the head. Very hard to get a drift with the backeddy from the position I had to fish without crowding him. Walked down to look at the Paradise knowing I wouldn't fish since there were 15 cars along the road. Turned round and started my trash collection on the way out. No heavy chop fishing in my near future.
