Chinook salmon have black gums and spawning fish in the Great Lakes turn a muddy brown in color. These large spawning fish are sometimes referred to as "mud sharks".

Nice fish, I havent got a king out of Erie since the 80's. Nice to see a stray made it into our lake. Prob from Huron or Ontario I would guess. Congrats, He will grill up nicely.

I think he means a fish can't get from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie because of that thing called Niagra Falls, but I'm only guessing. It could've come from Lake Huron or Michigan, or it could be an ultra rare wild one. I got one in 2008 on Elk Crick. Not as big as slick's fish though.

Yeah KJ, we know, I don't really like stockies that much. But sometimes thats what you have to deal with. I'd like to get some wild salmon too. We were just trying to rationalize where this fish came from & I forgot that NY was not an option. I also PM'd you back on that other issue you asked me about ! Thanks Jeb..

I'm sure a few salmon get mixed in with the steelhead in NY's hatcheries by accident and then stocked into the Erie tribs by accident. Also sure some come down from other great lakes, like the Pinks do. I think if there was wild reproduction occurring somewhere, there would be more of them than what there is. Not saying that there isn't/never was any wild reproduction, but for a few to still be around this long after everyone quit stocking them (on purpose) I'd think there would be more of them that what there is. Much easier for me to believe that a few got mixed into the wrong pools in the hatcheries among the zillions of smolts there.
