snow shoes questions

Hi All ,
I have never  tried a pair of snowshoes,
Does anybody have  recommendations on a reasonably priced  snow shoe set up ?
and Can you wear them over your Korkers? I tend to  screw  my korkers  directly to  my boots.

Thanks
Cape

Cape, I carry my waders in a backpack and wear Sorels with the snowshoes. My bootfoots have carbide studs screwed in and my snowshoes (Atlas) have a neoprene deck that would get torn up. Old style rawhide shoes w/ neoprene bindings  may survive a little better with cleats, but they would eventually get cut too, I would guess. Korker sandals would be the ideal, as you just put them on and off. I like my bootfoots, so I may experiment with a plain sole sandal I put on the bootfoots over the studded sole. Many popular holes get trails broken in quickly, but it's a great sight to see virgin snow leading off to your favorite winter lies.   Make sure you get them big enough to support your weight, you can look into used, and Cabelas has some cheaper good ones around 120, check places like Sierra Trading Post and even E-bay. When the post-holing gets up around knee deep, the shoes are a real blessing. I like getting outside in the winter and used mine for backpacking and icefishing before taking them to the SR. Snowshoeing is kinda fun on its own.

    Charlie ,
    thanks for the info .

I had a few days  of marathon knee deep post-holing last year , and it really took a toll . Not getting any younger :( .  I thought of the backpack  idea , but since some of the walks in are so long I tend to want a hot lunch  at the river , my backpack is  already full , with survival kitchen ( nothing like  a bowl of piping hot beef stew  on the river in the middle of Feb. ).  last year on one of the treks  a buddy actually brought a  sled in which we put our gear ( boots , pack packs  etc. )  that worked ok  but the sled can be a PITA when going over some of the tougher terrian. So that idea  is  out .  I think I need to find someone with a helicopter  that can drop me in and pick me up , Lol

    once again thanks

Cape, this is Nancy, my Sherpa.   Yeah, she goes with me all winter and carries all kinds of stuff including the propane heater and food. For a wife, she's not bad. Actually, I'm pretty **** lucky. Not enough snow for shoes in this pic. She walked out from the wirehole with  lunch orders from the guys fishing and brought them back still warm in a soft sided cooler.

    Cape ,
Fichy is the man in the know about snow shoes but I do have and use them for ice fishing & sr..
Mine are Tubbs and Ocean State Job lot has some for like $50.00. ( mine came from gander mt $140.00)
I will say the ones I seen there (osj)last season the cleats were not metal any more so inspect them carefully if you chose to go there.
By no means are mine top shelf but for my occasional usage they still are in good shape after 5 years..
