From what I have read (on here), the Vanish was reformulated in the past few years. The old stuff was horrible, broke very easily (I can confirm this), but new stuff is better. They lost my business personally. I've had pretty good success (strength wise) with P-Line. Not that it has seen much steelhead success... I use mine much more for leader material on braid for other species. 12lb sounds pretty heavy for steelhead, if that is what you are using it for? I'm sure it would make fine leader material for braid line, if it is the new stuff.

Do a search on the site - flourocarbon. That's pretty much why I went with P-line.

I've had back luck with Vanish in past years and stopped using it.  I now use Seaguar fluro in 8lb and 6lb, and never have any line problems anymore.  I try to stick with 8lb most of the time, but go to 6lb when it's really low and clear.

If your trolling I wouldn't troll with anything less then 20lbs. floro as a leader. In the streams I use 6lbs. gamma all the time.

I have been using Vanish for 5 years now and have no issues with it.  I'm probably one of the few that use it on this board but I do like it.  I also like Spiderwire's ultra cast flouro.

Have used it before, and DO NOT advise that you use it. I am sure there are some good spools out there, but I have experienced awful results, and so have some others I have talked with, along with the people on here saying to stay away. I personally use vicious floro. I have never had any problems with it, and it holds very well. I also have used P-line with good results also.

McCoy Mean Green 6lb with 4 lb tippet. Never had a problem landing them. Also, check out some braided line and use a fluro tippet. The stuff is indestructible.

vanish has lots of memory and after using it for a bit it will keep exploding off your reel. 4# Pline cant be beat.

Before I started fly fishing, I used 2# Vanish on my UL spinning rod and loved it. Landed plenty of fish on it (many heavier than the rating). That said, there's always the possibility of a bad batch, old line, abrasion, improper storage, and other things that may make any line lousy.

I tried fluorocarbon for the first time this year and I went with Vanish 8lb. Compared to mono, it was much more sensitive and it made a small fish feel like a big one. I thought it was ok, but I'm going to try another brand next year, just to compare.

I'm sure it would be fine as leader material, but I had poor results with it once when I spooled up an entire spinning reel like 6 or 8 years ago. It twisted up like crazy, especially after catching fish and kept breaking at knots. So I take no more chances. My new leader material of choice is The 100% Sufix Flouro...$8 for 50 yrds....its like a sore pecker.

About 4 yrs ago I gave vanish a shot and had a bad experience with memory using 12lb for stripers. Same year tried 4lb for trout and it kept breaking on stockies weighing a pound or 2. I gave up and switched to Seaguar Inviz-X for leader material for everything. For steelhead i use 6lb and 4lb in clear water. Absolutely love it. The Vanish might be better now since they re-engineered it per one of the comments earlier.

Seaguar Inviz-X here as well. 4, 6, and 8lb. Usually 6 or 8 main line w/ 6 or 4lb leader. It would take alot of convincing to get me to switch to anything else.
