I also enjoyed hunting in the Adirondacks.  We used to backpack up into the mountains between Hope and Wells off of Route 30.  Nothing like spending a couple of days in the middle of nowhere.

We used to go up for the season opener and on a few occasions we had snow in the higher elevations.  I can't tell you how many times I had to listen to some poor soul who got lost first day out, shouting for help and repeatedly firing three shots in the dark of the night.  Those little orange or blue trail markers were easily missed if you didn't pay attention to  what you were doing.

I think we both knew you were busting but I had to shoulder the blame for tuna since he was honoring my personal request.

    Sweet looking brookies HT

Judging by the size of the pack stapped to your back - your shoulder healed up fine.

Question about that big laker - do you folks eradicate them - as a manamgement tool to protect the brookie #'s?

drake, that laker sure got cooked.. Was told by a dec friend there should not be any there but maybe long ago some were dropped by accident, happens all the time.. If I do so encounter an invasive in brookie ponds ( I usually dont as I'm pretty selective) then yes they are eradicated and eaten if possible...
Then there are other ponds, lakes in the adk's that both are stocked in same water body.. Kind of a waste to me but I generally don't fish those types of water bodies..

cp, there are a few rock ponds.. If your talking about the Pharaoh Wilderness area I know it well.. Should have cooked the bass, at least I will when I find them.. Rock in Pharaoh is a pretty pond be it a big one but really there are much better ones fishing wise in same area.. Should have tried Little Rock..

RJ, here's my Flytepacker. Everything you see here weighs a little over 3 lbs. and compresses into a package a little more than a loaf of bread. I'm kind of  out of the loop on most things (except carpentry) but I have met very few people that haul rafts to fish. As I  intended  this raft for  above 12,000 feet I was looking for mega-light and small. It worked great on wilderness brookie ponds in Vt., too.  The seat's are out of my Fishcat float tube and double as PFD's. The paddles I chopped down from a 3 pc. yak paddle. (they are sealed and they float-I keep them overboard)  I use a mesh bag  with some rocks and para cord for an anchor. I wish I could get up there with you this fall, but it ain't gonna happen. I hired guys, but work is so far behind I get a few hours to relax this morning and it's back at it. Look forward to your report and thanks for the pics. Catch many splake?

Charlie, that raft looks sweet but the $$$ scared the heck outta me..lol... I understand your desire though about the weight..
Rafts are the only way to go (imo) as a hike in backpacker for me.. Enough of the canoe or even those pricy and delicate hornbeck's, again raft all the way !!
As you seen mine are a 2 person super caravelle which weighs 8 #'s. Very tough and durable with 5 chambers and a price tag of only $38.00 so no big deal if it gets wasted.. Some have lasted 3 seasons before a patch job is needed..

This weekend IS a GO for a 3 day hike in for brookies. So I'm pretty stoked as I thought my backpackin was done for the year..
Splake ? Not really, I have caught a few but mostly my brookie waters are reclaimed ponds.. I try as best as possible to avoid other species when targeting brookies. I just get a thrill hiking into puddle ponds and catching specks where the trails end and your back woods skills begin.

That said however, most of the record brookies are taken on waters that have smelt in them but then again I'm not looking to get my name in any books , just looking for solitude and a few tugs on my line..

They should be in full Flame spawning colors now so with any good fortune I'll have some sweet pic's come next monday eve..

Next spring my friend, we will kumbaya around the campfire in the ADK's..

Most are stocked on a contious basis, some heritage strain some domestic strain.. I believe it is 30 fish per acre.. Some ponds were reclaimed and stocked with heritage (original) strain then not re stocked to let natural reproduction take it's course. And The crown Jewels, be it very few, were never stocked but the dec takes eggs from those fish to continue the wild heritage strain gene.

So to answer your question, yes & no..

The ponds I really like to fish are puddle ponds of under 50 acres but not opposed to larger ones however they must be far off the beaten path without angler pressure which very few larger ones are..
