9/27-9/29
What a great trip. Lots of fish fished from below compactor all the way to lfz fish fish fish...... lost count but am home now with a smile and some sore arm and one less fly rod not the good way. For those of you that have trifold tonaue covers think before you set your flyrod on it. At compactor parking lot and gust of wind came up folded slammed up on my roof and made my 2 piece orvis a 4 piece. Good news is called on my way home and they said bring it over and they will replace it. But all in all a great trip and headed back Sunday with the 11 year old.

That's great UF! Orvis is very good about taking care of customers. There's some good guys in Manchester. Have fun with your boy. Charlie

ugly, nice trip.... Some people knock the Orvis rods, and true there are better, but they are a good company to support, do a lot for the fisheries, for the environment, and you cannot beat the Orvis warranty. I have purchased rods from other companies, as well as and many Orvis rods over the years, and my favorite small salmon rod is the older Orvis graphite versions, a "Shooting Star" 9 wt, 9' that I bought new in 1990. I've since searched out the same rod on ebay and bought more as back ups at unbelievable prices, compared to what I paid for a new rod. I love the softer feel of the older graphite scrim vs the newer high speed broomsticks that are out today. I've stepped on and broke my ferrule's and Orvis just replaced the rod, no questions asked. Had an older, (1980's) Tout Model, 8" 6 wt, that I sent in because the wraps were deteriorating, Orvis completely re-wrapped all the guides, cleaned up the cork and sent it back to me, all for 20 bucks. Anyway, If you like the older Orvis rods, that still work great today, you can find them for 100 bucks or so, beautiful rods, with a slower taper that works great on the SR. Tight Lines, OldSalt

Yeah it was a silver label about 8 years old or so. I spoke with a guy there and said more than likely they are replacing with a access rod going to miss my 2 piece though. As for the boy did some looking around Pulaski and got him stockfoot waders and boots all for under 75 buck not to big of a demand out there for extra small waders and size 5 boots. Most of thefish were kings and taken on a double bead headed nymph brown and black not sure what it was called but bought them at Whitaker's. Water was still pretty low Lfz was using 3X leader fish were very line shy. Down below the compactor went back up to 1X. Also took a walk down one of the brooks to get to the river and it wasn't hold any fish very low hard to believe with the amount of fish up river that there isn't any in there. Probably was at one time but sure it was a blood bath. Went to a few of my favorite spots on another and spots the water was not even over my ankles. We did get rain but not too much. Good luck to all on your next trip.

i have a rocky mountain series 4 weight from many years ago; we broke it in the truck door and yes they replaced it with shipping charges only... orvis definitely has a great reputation with their customer service...

I'm biased, because I used to work for an Orvis retail outlet, and I come from the same town as Tom Rosenbaur and have shared water with him many times over the years. At one time they were the only game other than custom jobs like Winston, or commercial jobs like Fenwick, for graphite and , as other have said, they back up the product. Waderboy could have put the company out of business if he sent one of his rods back another time. I've lost a lot more of them to car thefts than to breakage during use, and the ones I've sent back have been quickly returned fixed or replaced. My 8' 6 weight will be 25 next year, and my main SR and LO rod is a Rivermaster that is around 15 now, although the last few years it has mainly been used for throwing poppers. The western series 9' 6 wt was a great steelhead rod, and if you need to fish in the wind, the Henry's Fork was a great 5 wt. For most of the Brookies I see, my 2 wt is ideal. I'll have to check out this E-Bay thing, I think I've only seen 2 advertised used in the last 20 years around here. Off to the railhead to check on the capsicum crop! And I probably ought to go buy a fishing license! L13

Well L13, Great to see your post and that your still around...you novice angler..you !! I still use my old 8' Trout model, from '85 and I've been able to find two Orvis 9' 9 wts, from around 1990-92 on ebay for 100-125 bucks, both were mint condition, actually one was an 8 wt., now that I recall...and was never used. That 9'6" Western series along with the others at that time were great rods...my go to steehead rod was always their older 10' 7 weight before I started using 11' and 13' rods. Tight Lines, OldSalt

i never really had an orvis distributor near my home so ive never really used there rods... i am the type of person who likes to feel a rod before buying it for the most part... my #4 rocky mountain series was a great rod though and it was purchased from the orvis dealer in roscoe when we used to fish the western catskills consistently some 20 years ago... the only other orvis ive casted was a 9' 9 weight in nassau for bones that the guide supplied; i was quite impressed with its casting ability... salt; i now am often hooked on using switch and two handers also; but i will say a #7-10' was a staple for many years with me...

When Jim Rusher still owned Whitaker's, they were an Orvis distributor. Might be worth a look to see if the new folks maintianed the franchise, or if they have any NOS rods around. May be a year without hot sauce, noone has the raw materials in any kind of quantity, and what is out there is mostly green. No habeneros at all, and the prices on what are there are high this year. I'm pretty sure they stopped making the 9' 6weight Preformer because of me. 4 times the first year, mostly my bad. 6 times overall til I had to settle for the Henry's fork as a replacement.

Here's my 20 year old Orvis 2 wt. I occasionally use for sightfishing mud trout. Notice it's bent about 2' past the butt. I've used it for many real trout and smallies and even some stripers. The mud trout in the pic was 12-13 lbs. Some of the old Orvis rods really had some strength. I gave most of mine away to young guys starting to flyfish. Charlie

I have always liked showing the buttplate to the fish. My performer stood up every time. I broke mine on things like overhead treelimbs when a steelhead threw the hook and the last time the explanation I sent said simply three year old car door. That Orvis store was where I met Charlie before he straightened his life around. Great mullberry hatch by that shop for top feeding mud troot.

L 13 Whitaker's still has Orvis in it along with other brands. Not a huge selection but I,m sure they can get them.
