If you have a extra spool for your reel, I would suggest spooling it up with something a little heavier for fishing the lake. FishUSA sells the best monofilament for steelhead (my opinion) DAM Tectan Premium. The diameter is .23 mm on the 11.9 lb test where most are around .33 mm, so the diameter is smaller with a greater breaking strength.

Whenever you are fishing around a large crowd of people, which is usually the case at trout run, you are guaranteed to lose fish due to them running to your left or right. With a little heavier line you will be able to control them a little better if anything. The lake is usually a little more off color than the streams, so tying directly to the mono should not be an issue, but if you have to use a leader I would suggest going with the same diameter as your monofilament. At least you have more of a chance of landing the fish and not making a mess than if fishing with 4 or 6 lb.

Floating baits work well if you are not float fishing, as well as the normal steelhead methods used under a float. Trout run is not deep and you do not have to cast far to catch fish. Often times they are no more than 10-25 feet out if you are knee deep from the shore. It can be exciting at the right time.
