Steelhead Fly Line

Just out of curiosity, what kind of fly line are you guys throwing for steelhead these days? Just replaced the crap line that came "free" with my rod/reel combo and wondered if there was a trend in what people are using.

Yeah. Weight forward anything that is cheap or a line with the head cut off or turned around as a running line, that is what I use.

Fly fishing in Erie is not really "fly fishing". I wouldn't waste my money on some line that you aren't even going to be casting.

as loomis says an inexpensive line is all you need. one thing you should find out though is if the line stiffens up during cold weather. research the fly line you buy and find out. i've used cortland 333+
SI has some inexpensive lines also.
if you plan on casting in the lake you might not want to cut the line and just use the running line.

Scientific Anglers 7 -8 wt, wf-8-floating or L-8-floating. And I agree get the cheap stuff cause it will get cut up by the rocks. And as an added bonus don't even bother with expensive tippett. just get a small spool of straight 6 or 8 pound test quality mono and use that.

I disagree about the leader material.

Get some good stuff as this is what is coming in contact with shale ledges more than your mainline.

I use beartooth flouro, cheap and way better abrasion resistance than monofilament.

Whatever came on my rod must be garbage, its so thick and unflexible that it won't go out my last eye properly. Gander mountain had trout taper sharkskin clearanced for like half price so I picked it up. I guess I am just a sucker for the name. When I got it home and went to put it on, someone had switched the 7wt spool in the box with a 6wt spool. Back to the store it went, kinda wish they would have checked it in the first place and they acted like I was inconveniencing them by returning it. Went to fishusa to see what they had in stock as well, but they weren't open till 8pm like the website says, I got there at 7.

I will have to check out that beartooth floro. I usually use seaguars and find there regular stuff to be better than the grand max premium stuff they also make but for the price it should reel the fish in for you.

    Gotta agree on that.

I've been using Seagar Invis-X in either 4-6-8 lb depending on water conditions.

250 yards for under $20 makes alot of leaders.

Cortland salmon steelhead taper in #7 was my last purchase... it works for me... although I prefer a hardy weight forward for the most part... it all comes down to water type and how "you" want to cast... for leader I would recomend a slight taper instead of straight length... maybe 1' of 12 or15- 3' of #8 or 10- then tippet... it will induce proper roll over of your fly and prevent your leader fouling up or knotting up good luck...
