I had to go get mine to prove that there was a 4 foot restriction between weight and hook the first year it changed.
That was to the DEC officer that told me I didn't know what I was talking about after I told him he could go to the Church pool and write 20 ticket easily.
Still haven't figured out if he was lazy of dumb.

Read those reg books they give out with a license every year from cover to cover every so often.. Also a good idea to carry on with you..
NYS no longer sends them w/ the lifetime--ya just get an envelope w/ some tags in it---many moons ago they would send a nice detailed harvest report too.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

links don't always work here

I believed you, but stated that the reg was total bs and common sense should apply.

A nice DEC officer had no prob with my "straight taper" $20 flyline at the UFZ.
maybe the 30-40ft "flycasts" convinced him.

I know drake; for the 3rd time now

Don't get funny on me now... was just saying...

Hopefully a few people will benefit from this rapala discussion; and the many others on this board... I believe that is the ultimate goal of the board...

slayer, they are free and at any sporting or clerks office.. I would write to dec and complain..

Drake: That -4 deg Feb morning on LFZ while getting out of my truck we had a dec officer inspect our lines.. My buddy forgot his reel and my spare had an 8wt line turned around (thus running line) which I use for C&D on the downstream sections of the river.. He knew what he was looking at and said NO go.. So we took the line off and put it back to w/f/f..

Funny thing, he also checked our license and made me take my glasses off to look at my eyes and said only eye color is on the license.. I gave him the blood shot eye stare.. Seen him 3 times that day at various areas and twice he made us pull out our license. Third time I told him this was getting old and he left.
That was the one and only time I have ever encountered (knowingly) dec on the river..

well to this I can add.. My father did not fly fish and was not into using egg sacks.. He would use rainbow trout rapalas and spoons such as a blue fox pixie along with various plastic jigs.. He caught many fish..
You need to keep an read the regs as far as lures are concerned.. Floating lures (rapala) with trebles from Nov-1 > Aug-15th .. Sinking lures (spoons) w/trebles April-15 until Aug-15 (general fishing regs apply) . Jigs/ no more the 1/8 oz same date as above..

April-15th most of the river except fly zones become General Fishing Regs.
It used to be March-15th years ago..

Sure Rapalas work

there are certain shades of grey with SR regs,

like 4'weight rule - DEC gives allowance for pinners

if only the float anchor weight > 4' away from hook - (e.g. - to fish a deep pool)

DEC's view of INTENT via observation has alot to do with it.

you found a winner that cold morning HT

I've had 3 encounters with DEC on SR at different times - each Officer was pleasant and professional. The UFZ guy I purposely asked him the question and volunteered the fact I had running line on.

Luck of the Draw, Star- Alignment? I don;t know.

drake , it's really not Grey but black and white.. Generally if an officer sees you are fishing then they will use judgment and allow it.. Any officer has the right to use their judgment to the law be it black-n-white or not.. Good ones do a good job on the calls..
Havent you ever been let off on a speeding ticket before ? It's black-n-white but not always enforced to the letter ..

Fichy passed through your town on the way to Orvis today first time I saw the Battenkill up that way since the storms.... Man the water took some land with it the bad side of mother nature.

UF, if you want to fish it some time, let me know. Pretty ripped up and changed. I don't know if you have been east of Arlington over in the Kelly Stand. It's great wilderness fishing. I was afraid to look, but finally did. The 13 mile dirt road is in shambles. The 3 one lane bridges are gone. The Roaring Branch now runs where the road use to be. The trails and accesses to the Long Trail and the At are closed. Some of the ponds that were a pretty heavy hike to start with are now 15 mile treks  through swamps because of the loss of the road. The trails are trashed.  I'll be curious to see if the Forest Service just sells off the land outright for the timber and let the logging companies put in their own road. That road  remained relatively unchanged for 300 years  and it'll never be the same again. Mother nature has a mean streak, if you ask me. Irene had PMS.

fichy - same thing happened in many areas all over.

Lots of trees down too - in the middle of the woods - from wind and/or just fell over waterlogged.

Everywhere around is vernal pools now.

good luck on your end
