generally it brings out peoples character and what they are about besides talking fishing behind a computer screen.. anyone can make anything up with just a few keyboard strokes. if it's sr only discussion that should be had then all good by me, notice served. carry on and I will hold back until there is something I can offer to a thread.

We are all different people in different ways but have to remember we all have one thing in common our love for fishing that is what brought us all here to this board. I have learned a lot from you guys and hope to continue. Wish you all luck on the river.

While most of my trout fishing has been done on lakes, mainly trolling,.....i have always used Rappalas. I have had decent luck with them. Do people ever use them on the river for browns? I would think they would get some good action going against the current.

well to this I can add.. My father did not fly fish and was not into using egg sacks.. He would use rainbow trout rapalas and spoons such as a blue fox pixie along with various plastic jigs.. He caught many fish.. You need to keep an read the regs as far as lures are concerned.. Floating lures (rapala) with trebles from Nov-1 > Aug-15th .. Sinking lures (spoons) w/trebles April-15 until Aug-15 (general fishing regs apply) . Jigs/ no more the 1/8 oz same date as above.. April-15th most of the river except fly zones become General Fishing Regs. It used to be March-15th years ago.. Sure Rapalas work

Used a blue fox minnow spin--it worked--I did take some mockery from a famous SC guide on it's use---rolled off my back like water on a duck.

hey charlie its funny you mention that; i met a guy targeting small atlantics below ellis 3 years back; we got in to talking; he had a 5 weight fly rod and was fishing dry flies... i mentioned rapalas because we had gotten in to talking about drop back steel and i had caught some droppies a month before hand on rapalas... this guy shocked the chit out of me by telling me that he actually made his own floating lures out of wood; he proceded to tell me that he fished them on a fly rod and he did it by swingin them across runs and tailouts... sounded so cool that i wanted to try it myself... maybe this is some food for thought

Here is one all fancy, but the basic one I tied works well. Weight it just a tad, about 4 wraps 2/3 back so it's just under surface.. Strip it like you do stripers and it darts all erratic driving the trout crazy..

I'm sticking to my original thought, sorry. Nice fly though. I fish mylar covered foam sand eel patterns for trout with a sink tip- it's near the same thing. They catch fish, but not the BIG ones as consistently as the old tuned dive and wobble. That consistent tracking of the rapala allows fish to home in on it, something the big ones that don't like to waste energy appreciate. When they dump the 2 year olds in the Battenkill, same as they do the Ausable, they will get aggressive and kill erratic movement. I use to use a size 4 partridge salmon hook wrapped in .010 lead with a tinsel and elk hair tail and australian possum that creates a bubble sheen when wet, and darted all over because of the buoyancy of the elk hair. I've also used arched foam bodies with slanted faces that dart and wobble along the lines of a Flatfish. Still don't outfish a Rapala. I've spent alot of time down in Tenn. chasing trophy browns on the tailwaters. I've gone head to head with some of the good ol' boys using them thar plastic minners. They kicked my Yankee butt. I have freinds that are considered some of the best guides in the south that I tried for ages to help develop THE fly. That's where I'm coming from.. You've found yours, mine is still in the material piled on my table somewhere.

Charlie; are you opposed to trying to epoxy some type of forward baffle tongue to the bottom of a streamer hook near the eye??? If done to a bucktail streamer; you just may achieve your goal...

If done to a bucktail streamer; you just may achieve your goal... Sounds like a difficult engineering project DB, not only to attach to hook securely but having proper angle, shape, pitch of said tongue so it tracks properly. Also raises the question if that glued-on tongue will hold up to stream hazards/casting impacts, or luckily a fish battle. Might work - but for me it would require way too much effort than I would be willing to do to create a fly - never a box full of them. If you get that tongue thing to work, let us know. If you get that tongued streamer to surface on it's own power during retrievel pauses to mimick a suspended minnow, definitely let us know. for now, I'll cast the vote w Fichy toward ole-fashioned molded plastic rapalas.

nice one WB, if you only knew all the mistakes in my life.. Shoot some folks write books and get paid for their stories.. I have a novel and not a nickel to show for it though.. my apologies to all and any for all the mistakes that continue to this day.. Sheetrock is once again calling for today. P.S. I do like how my post count keeps dropping.. Soon I'll be a novice angler and right where I want to be..

rapalas - I "think" restrictions on them for Salmon River include no use of multiple trebles. I know spinners must be single hook in rear..

Drake, didnt think spinners were legal at all, thought it had to be a floating lure meaning it floated when at rest. Rapalas I think also have to have a single hook untill the end of october than you can have trebles on. Could be wrong though, they change the regs so freakin much.

i looked it up - you got it. not sure if a single hook rapala would have the same performance or bouyancy without the trebs, but i understand the slammin season restriction because the lures "nuance" does not factor for most folks - based on memory of countless Jplugs dancin in the air. After Nov 1 - regular store bought raps are legal. check..

come on guys know the regs for the waters your fishing.. YES you can use spinners.. Single hook only Until the GENERAL NYS fishing rules apply APRIL-15 THEN you can use trebles on spinners.. That has been that way for years.. The only change about 10 years ago was the GENERAL regs changed from March-15 to April-15.. Trebles on Floating lures did change about 3 years (or so) ago to Nov-1.. Now General Fishing Regs also mean you can fish at night on the river as well. I understand not knowing if you do not intend to use such lures but at least Read those reg books they give out with a license every year from cover to cover every so often.. Also a good idea to carry on with you..
