I really think  that winter steelhead fishing has made me a  better angler in  my other angling pursuits. Especially when it comes to concentration, persistence and confidence.

resistance to brutal temps helps too,

once mine turn grey like a spoiled pork chop it is game over,

the games are getting shorter.

No other board is as open as this one in really helping people that come looking for information.
Everybody has their own take so there will be contradicting info and people will defend their choice of method hence conflit.

Ma I add that when none of about a half dozen people aren't on or just back from the river there are no reports.
It gets tedious reading and answering the same questions over and over.

hey DB I checked MFF for you.

RULE #1
look to the SNAGGER man. Not only expert level advice & info - you can bank on his chit to be the unadulterated truth:

***********************
Saturday September 24th fishing report:

Estuary has been full of kings for quite some time now... theres no weather to trigger them right now, hopefully they'll just move for no reason...Every year theres a run this week coming up, usually triggered by rains...but until then the river is tricky right now.. most of the action is mid to upper river right now..ball park and lower is tough from what I was told, actually closed the station for a couple hours and went scouting around looking for some fish for the guys here, I mean besides the trestle pool... I don't send guys there...Some of the veterans here hooked 20+ fish, but most were just happy hooking a half dozen today. Theres not enough kings in the river to support the crowds that showed up today..every lot from the LFZ to ellis was full..three rows in ellis and the shoulder of the road full...It is what it is till the next run arrives, good mix of browns..steel..and coho's I seen today on ropes in my adventures, I hooked 7 coho's in about 2 hours fishing this afternoon... Got to watch Pat Miura cast his spey at pineville..i'm not a flyfisherman, but man is he graceful..great stuff to watch......... good luck if you go boys.....

******************************

IMO you can't get any more detailed info than that...

The rest of the reports add a grain of salt and try to break the local codes - human nature at play I guess - not unique behavior for fishing sites.

Don't sell many of em after the campers leave----matter of fact sales drop by 1/3 after the CAMPERS leave--**** fishermen keeping the town afloat.

Frame; snagged is handsdown the man; to say that other knowledgeable anglers are just a grain of salt to add on things; a little bit of a stretch.... just my opinion...

Thanks for the update on mff though; it had been a while since a report like that came from him....

One thing thatspretty cool about that site is the factthat there is really no mockery; I'll spare the details.... you can take this however you'd like and feel free to give your opinion... I could say a lot more but not really worth the time... carry on garth....

well i guess i cant help myself; just really noticed the comment snagger made about the spey guy; its more or less completely relevant to the opening statement that started this thread if you use your imagination...

in short; i came here to discuss fishing about 2 years ago... 2 years later; it seems as if there was way more BS that came along with it; some good and some bad... the thing that gets me the most is the constant need to defend and prove ones self here... for the stone busting; it's definitely a little overboard... yes; i did subscribe to mff; and no i dont post there often; but one thing i can say is from the few times i posted there; and even referring to old times from years ago; there was positive feedback; positive pms, and thank yous or kind gestures exchanged... this is what life is all about to me; eff all the negative BS that comes along with many things in life... mostly ego driven... one piece of advice; folks should try not to one up another soooooo much... or tell someone "youre wrong and Im right"... ok; i will spare you guys of any more details i promise...

carry on wayne

well, DB, at least he didn't lash out at any pinners (opening statement relevancy - and all that...)

me thinks Slammo needs to fire off the fumagation cannon in this room, infestation of "mangina itch" keeps trying to rear its ugly head - way worse than black mold or termites.

p.s. - check Websters for definition of "Grain of Salt", I ain't explainzin it for ya.

in other news:
14 dead crows this morning, jumped a fox and bunch of deer in pre-dawn light.
Wish crows were legally shootable every day - besides Fri-Sun timetable.
But on the bright side, hunting spots need time to cool down between killinz, crows ain't stupid.

Metal - I believe you about the campers spending more Ching on your Chips, and I laugh (instead of cry) every time you bash a pinner.

Not against pinners(fish w/ alot of em)--- just the lock step, elite, zero tolerance crowd---I'm all good w/ any technique as long as people r trying to "fish"

No hates on any style technique or method here.... I started fly fishing at age 9 actually and did not pick up a spinning rod till just a few years ago since... it was very revitalizing. I even use floats on the spinning rod... I can't tell you how many dirty looks I've gotten from pinners.... not kidding here... opinions are one thing; mockery and rudeness is another; its become obvious that this distinction is hard to depict on the interwebs....

Charlie: my sincere apologies if "I" offended you in any way... I assure you it was a misunderstanding...

My opinion on thingamabobbers is really irrelevalant as I've never used them; I've just seen many people misuse them and foul hook fish all day long and real in floundering steelhead to the point whhere they will most likely die... i'll look forward to trying it out with you this winter...

Hey Metal-
Used ta be one of those year in advance guys. Was bout the only way ya could be sure to get a room to stay in and arrange vacation time at work. If I called Jim even 6 mos before chances were -full up.
Hadda take the chance not only on the fishes but the weather too, then hope like heck ya didnt have to do Court at the last minute.( that fouled up a few trips too).
Some years just got stormed outa the whole season ( coupla days) - others few fishes. and then there were the great ones.
That was just the way it was cuase ya basically hadda guess for that one time a season trip.
Guys got it batter now- not a bad thing either.

i hear where youre coming from both metal and retired... in short though; i will say i think the world was a better place before the internet and cell phones

as for internet and fishing; it seems as if folks are expecting to just have fish at their footstep after researching the stuff on the net... as most can see; thousands of fish have run the gauntlet already; but still many people are having poor trips... theres alot to be said about those old school shot in the dark trips before the webs... you always knew what to expect; a different experience everytime... and from that; you learned...the web is creating an image in new anglers heads; and often that image is skewed once they make it...

Saw a few REAl FISHERMEN this Summer most every day- some neighbor kids came around and  dug worms in the mulch around my place here in Ct.
We live on a small lake and those kids were there with the garden hackle catchin gills all Summer- Rods bobbers and a big white bucket-
REAL FISHERMEN- no gimicks no fancy equipment -nuttin- just 'gone fishin'.
  Real nice to see---

Just got in from 2 long days of work at deer camp.. Sorry I'm to beat to read through all the posts and will catch up tomorrow.. Hope anyone that went fishing had good luck or at least a good experience..

Wanted to touch on 2 points that got off topic..
I have been using the internet for about 15 years now and this is what I have found..
1. There are people who talk about the outdoors through a key board
2. There are people who go outdoors and share the experience

I tend to be the latter and apologize if sharing it becomes boring to some..

Second (since 2 seems to be the magic number) other things I have come across from the internet.

1. It has ruined many a good fishing spots (not just SR) But also helped many people enjoy the sport that they may otherwise pass up..
2. I have met and become very good friends with like minded people who share the outdoors. Also found many others who you just babble through the screen with and hope you never meet them..

So fishing in general again is what you make it to be.. A good experience for yourself and respect for the sport & others around you..

If you care to view my weekend outdoor adventures (or any other day) then I will gladly post some of the many photographs I took or take.. If not then no sweat off my back..

TOO much, maybe check out my morning music in the NY off topic and you'll all feel better..
What really are we trying to do here besides share info, help others out and a little B.S. along the way ?

Really starting to suck and yes I know I was a contributor to some chaos as well, but it's getting old , even for me..
