most mid arbors i find hold no more backing than a standard arbor. the difference is the arbor is bigger for quicker retrieve.
a large arbor holds much more backing than both for the weight line suggested. i have a mid arbor but i would have gotten a large arbor if i had to do over again.

I prefer Ann Arbor. Better football!. Really now; what difference does the arbor size make for steelhead? It's not like we're fishing the flats for bonefish. BTW Have the bonefish come into the shallows on P. Isle yet? They usually follow the first steel?

IMHO The most desirable thing on any big fish reel is an excellent drag. Arbor size is immaterial if your drag sucks.

the arbor makes a difference in line retreval rates

    in some comparisons 3x more
meaning- you have to turn a normal reel 3 times to pick up the same amount of line as 1 turn of a LA

becarful not to get a reel that is too big/heavy that is makes your setup unbalanced

when a steelhead is coming at you and you gotta reel in quick to keep tension, i'll take a large arbor.
when a fresh steel heads for canada i want to make sure i have enough backing on for when he decides the USA is the place to be and he turns around!

plus a large arbor on steelhead cricks look so badazz and uppity!

    +1..

There are times even with a large arbor you play he11 trying to keep up with a Steelie running at you. Couldn't imagine trying it with a mid arbor.

Which is why, for years, I used an automatic reel. Nothing will take line in faster. Plus the drag of the winding spring acts as a drag. only problems: Heavy, and limited line cap.
