Help for a New Guy!

Hello all. I am new to the site and have been following the posts for a couple days now......very amusing. I recently bought some land in Redfield and plan on going up there the first week of November. I plan on doing some Steelhead and Trout fishing while I'm there. I do not do fly fishing as of now. That being said, at that time in the year, do I need waders to have a chance of getting fish? If so, 3.5 or 5mm neoprene good? What about bait? Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

    Dave,
Welcome to the site and congrats on the new land..
I would say YES you should have waders.. I recently posted a link to some reasonable priced closeout waders..
If you primarily plan to fish winter (cold weather) then Neos would be a good choice.. The boot foot even better as they are much warmer for your feet.
That said, you will sweat to death with neo's if you plan on using them for a year round wader..

The best option is a breathable wader, good layering with the right materials and a large enough wading boot for good circulation..

Fly fishing is not the only way to fish, I fish all aspects of gear but once you catch fish on a fly-rod you'll soon develop the liking for it..
It is my primary tool except deep winter, I'm just too lazy to keep de-icing the guides every third cast..lol..

If you want the best opportunity to learn the river I'd highly suggest a good reputable guide.. There are many good & not so good so research well or feel free to ask.. I do guide steelhead but not self promoting in any way..
Now another option is to get to know some of the folks here They are all good fishermen..

Hope you enjoy your time here and share your experiences with us..

    Welcome..

if you plan on any kind of walking, breathables are the way to go - the boyz will thank U 4 sure.
like HT said underlayers will keep you warm - fleece or underarmour cold gear (IMO worth the $$$)....
for the coldest months bootfoot, by springtime you may want to spring for booties and wading shoes to compliment your wardrobe.

snow will be a factor - not a good match for felt,, some guys buy all types of pricey shoes with the latest techogizmoes - I'm old school - Korkers K5000 strapped sandals - over $50 Chotas work for me (the korkers will probably outlive you), Dat said -you can climb an ice-glazed tree, billy-goat a slick river bank, or tag a bunch of river rocks with the industrial-class cleats whilst you wait for your pard to show up with a coupla 40ezzz...

I've always been satified with Cabela's or Hodgeman waders.

    staze dry d00d..

Korkers, studs, chotas, gladiator sandals--anything. But get something. Those rocks are slicker than snot! And in the winter they can be a life saver. Are they require in winter at DSR? Anyone know. I seem to remember something like that.

    Welcome aboard- its a hoot--
Neos are the thing as the season goes on into colder weather. Before that its just tighty whiteys and breathables-hot hot hot- then it gets cold cold cold.
So your pretty much set for the upcoming parts of the season but DO GET cleets or you will be underwater.
The guide thing may well be worth whatever it costs and save a few years on the learning curve. specially with the Hos and Steel coming in now cause they EAT stuff but knowing some tricks will make a great day.
If you do not get a guide I would suggest getting away from the big pools and go someplace where only  a few guys are and just sit back and watch the show for a bit. Watch their rigs and how they fish them and dont be fraid to ask-most on the river are more than willing to help.
Good luck and great choice- its a great place.

fish em like you do trout
eggs sacks work well...my personal favorite being the blue goo sacks from the pineville shop
if you are fishing for steelies worms (trout worms or red worms), waxies, single eggs, BEADS all work well

find some water, wet a hook and talk to those around you...you will learn alot

if you want to jump start the learning a good guide will save you a couple years of doing stuff wrong ....i say that out of personal experience

    have fun :)

Thank you all for the responses. Keep the tips coming if you don't mind? I will definitely get some waders. A guide is not in the budget right now, so I will bother the locals for their knowledge. So far, I have a 9', spinner combo. I was told 12# test, with 10# leader. I already got my hooks, ball bearing swivels. Any recomendations on weights? And do I need a bobber?

Use just enough weight  to skip off the bottom a time or two on each drift. -too few keep the bait too high and too many will stop ya cold in the rocks- just a skip or two will do nicely- you will learn quickly how much in each favored spot.
Gotta cast out and just a bit down in most places and then let the line quarter the place your fishing. Casting up will stop ya cold in the rocky bottom.
Egg sacs are a great spin bait- for Steel especially- and I personally use blue as the season goes on. They can be pricey though so a fly or imitation can also do nicely.  Real sacs greatly enhance your odds though.
Red and orange can be great also and increase your chances on a Ho or Brown. Most places will sell containers of mixed colored sacs.
I dont do the bobber thing much but many do. Gotta have the line pretty much adjusted to the depth where you are fishing and the weights placed to keep it near the bottom.

Your pole is good to go. You can drop down to 8lb test tippet tied to the bottom of your swivel. I attach split shot to the tag end of the tippet knot attached to the swivel. If you get snagged (and you will), in most cases you only lose the weight.
Buy your lead b4 heading to NY. No weights > 4 feet from hook.

Depends on ur tolerance of the cold---I personally HATE wearing neos--and boot foot---I generally wear a thin poly sock under a reg white sock and I'm good to go---only thing that gets me is the hands---I use fingerless rag wool--good idea to have some hand warmers on ya---can even be used to thaw a frozen reel.Bring everything you got--early Nov can be 70 or snowing(sometimes in 24hrs--lol).

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

I cant have anything on the fingers--fishin or workin---if it's super cold I got 1 of those hunting "tubes" and put a warmer inside that.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

Salmotrutta, I do not have a cabin as of now. I plan on roughing it with tents and sleeping bags and a nice fire. A cabin is not in the budget for now, being that I just purchased the land. My short-term goal is to put up a little hunter cabin, than eventually put a nice log cabin for retirement purposes on it. Does anyone here do or know anyone that does "brush hogging?" I have to clear out the field part of the property.

That would be the upper river.
I see you use spinning gear.
Anywhere downriver of the bridge in Altmar.
    Pocket water just downstream.
The barrel and schoolhouse hold fish and fishermen all winter long.

good idea to have some hand warmers on ya---can even be used to thaw a frozen reel.

    Step
    1) remove reel from rod (cannot do if you tape a pinreel to sliding ring rod butt - that's why I think they suk),
    2) Unzipper jacket,
    3) Place reel next to your man-boob,
    4) Have a smoke, pop a pill, or stare at the ice flows for a few minutes for those that do not indulge in neither of the pre-mentioned filthy habits),
    5) reattach nicely warmed, free wheeling reel to rod and getz back to feeshin..

    my 2cents worth..
