Noodle rod is GREAT for Steel but can be a bit too light for the Kings and Hos in any decent current.. All round might be some kinda medium action rod- -lotsa guys will say 8 and a half but I'd go bout 10' or a bit more if I was gonna buy a new one. Used lotsa different reels and bout the only thing of any great importance is line capacity and a decent drag system. Some will say to go light with line but frankly I like bout a 14 cause of the Kings, big Hos and rocks.

Line > Oct, I spool it with 12# xt clear.. Leader , 10# frog hair tippet.. That will keep you in both games.. Rod.. I like a med , med -soft 8'6 rod.. aprox rated 6 - 12# That rod will handle both species fine.. Thing is most compulsives have rods for each species or many more .. But that set up will work for both..

Got a 10' light noodle and nothin hurt more while Steel fishing last Nov than having to bust off unknown big fishies that went down into the swift water cause the rod wouldnt hold them. On the other hand it was GREAT on the Steel cookie cutters. So many choices and so little brain.

I have a 10 foot St Croix labled for 6-12 lb test line. I spool it with 12 lb xt and tie in a snap swivle with 10 lb leader off it. Either pencil lead on snap or slinky or 6lb mono with a shot train. Works weel for me (although I fish a fly stick 90% of the time, For reels I get medium priced with decent drags. I have had expensive and cheap reels. The cheap don't last a season (if you are into consistent salmon action). The expensive usually hold up much better but have had them seize up under the constent pressure of hot kings. I find that medium priced reels hold up about as well as the top of the line, generaly have good drags. And I can afford to replace them as needed. Nice to know a little about you "kid". Welcome aboard. Now lets work on your post count! Lee

Got a 8'6" browning six rivers and 9'0" fenwick HMX, both are moderate to moderate-fast; 10-12 lb test with 8-10 lb leader (fluoro, something like Seaguar), only fish Shimano so I tossed Stradics on both. I wish I would have stayed St. Croix loyal with my float rod, mostly because they stand behind there products. Two times sent off my bass rods and they sent them right back no charge. By the way, my rods handle Salmon just fine, just got to play em... I kept myself in the 100-150 price range, which sort of eliminated G. Loomis and St. Croix from the list. Fished Ugly sticks for a long time growing up, loved them but wanted to get away from fiberglass. In my opinion, the weight and sensitivity of a good graphite rod is hard to beat.

Brownings are good and reasonable.. Mine are all ols school usa made st. croix.. had a dealer friend in the 80's so they were reasonable then and still perform well.. WB, I have an 8'6" st.croix too.. Super nice salmon rod.. Josh, seems your good with reel and only need to buy rod.. Honestly today most are all the same China.. So don't get roped into the price.. If it does not say USA then it's not.. Even St. Croix uses china materials now.. A med priced $100.00 or less 8'6" med , med>soft 6>12# rated will be fine..

i have a couple of the top end rods i prefer the pinnicle 10'6" noodle rod its got enough to handle kings in all but the kind of flows you shouldn't be in anyway and they are 1/4 the price of my high end rods so if i break one i don't care i use shamanno reels usually the mid grade ones...nice drag and again if i cook one i won't cry...btw i have 5 years in on the current two (i also have a couple browning reels that work well) line 14lb mono main line now when they are hot...12lb leader in mid oct i'll switch to 10 lb main then for steelies i drop to 6lb and sometimes on the erie tribs 4 if the water is clear just my set up, but it works well

Had a Lamiglass casting rod for Bass, I will admit I really liked it, however was more of a set up for flipping and didn't serve well for slow playing bass on 8 in worms carolina style.

Rods are like golf cluds. Don't use a putter off the tee and don't put with a sand wedge.

I'll be fly fishing the Salmon River for salmon from Oct 6 - Oct 23 up Pulaski. I use an Ugly Stick fly rod. I currently have four fly rods I carry with me, each one named. My largest salmon last year on fly was 29lbs. I'm hoping the run is as good as it was last year. I work the river, Trout Brook, and Orwell. Several years ago, the place to be was the State Police hole, where the water fall is located. Because people kept crossing the Hywy, I'm told they stopped putting something in the water which brought the salmon up into the stream. I know there have been none there for the past three years or longer.

October is the perfect time to hit the Salmon River. I'm going from Oct 6 - Oct 23. Get yourself an Ugly Stick fly rod. They're inexpensive and, they'll handle the salmon. I landed a 29lber last year.

I landed a 29lber last year. Only downfall on those ugly sticks is they are HEAVY to cast all day long.. I would suggest a nice mid priced graphite.. I know a friend that has a st. croix triumph and likes it.. Also Cortland rods are nice.. Keep an eye in the bargain bins.. now is when closeouts and discontinued models go on sale BIG time.. Kind of shows you the mark ups

agree with the heavyness of the ugly stick and i feel that the tip is too whippy for me although i gave my ugly stick to my dog as a chew toy and you know what happened to it...... i had to take him to the vet to have the fiberglass splinters removed from his mouth and throat DON'T TRY IT comercial is full of S**t!!!!!!!!!!!

Used it for years on SR - only issue is very 'soft 'tip. ya feel the rocks and hits a bit late. Great rod though for playing decent size fish- specially in hard water.
