Hey Tuna- Thats one reason I like the upper stretches as the season goes on.
Love to watchem on those beds and ya can see them hit like that too. Best of both worlds IMHO.
Gotta be willing to go a few days sometimes W/O a King late cause they are gettin chased all over the place but the Hos and Steel make up the difference.
Got a coupla little overlooked spots though where they go sometimes and calm down up there. Have even watched as they hit sacs on the nest  and not even tried to hookem- was after Steel.

RT:
now that I read your edit The guys that come up only a couple days a year should either :
1. do their home work on how to catch fish and learn to respect the fishery or
2. hire a respectable guide to show them correctly

My strategy works pretty well also
Yes I get skunked but it's called fishing and not just catching. It's what you learn and take away for the next time that matters.. Heck I learned something totally new yesterday. You can catch fish in pools if the fish are fresh and un molested..

Same thing all over- the guys on the other Forum are having this same discussion - changin from flossers to fly guys over time  and all.
Kinda like to hear it- seems to be spreading around.
Sounds nice Tuna but frankly -back in those days had ta save up for the trip and then it was usually a 2 nighter once a year. Used my salt water gear for a long time till working up a decent SR rod and reel ( cheap)- Had a wife in full time College and two kids in  School when I started up here.
A guide was right OUT. Time changes lotsa stuff thankfully.

Seem like lotsa those guys dont care to make any distinction =LOL= Since I am in active recovery for a similar disorder I tend to recognize the symptoms rather quickly.
The 40/50  hookup guy yesterday kinda tipped his hand a teeny little bit.
Got me sittin here talkin to myself-----again---they said that would stop too.

Who the hell needs 40-50 hook-ups anyway, especially bad hook-ups...yes there are those magical days when it can happen,

right place, right run, right fly...but really I'd bet money on it that if any of those guys were taken aside, shown how it's done and

actually had a few fish eat their fly, they'd be hooked (pardon the pun). Like I've said, all it takes is the right technique and they

would be amazed at how these fish can really fight.

Well looks like its still flowing 400+ down river.
No doubt slowing them down still being early but there is no doubt they are still trickling in and moving in a little thicker in the dark.
Doesn't usually make for big number days but a real shot at a freshie or three if your in good water and willing to work for them.

when we could used to fish them in the hudson river you talk about people being frustrated for not having the right color on you can stand right next to someone and cast the same spot and if its a differnet color they have no luck.

My property is 1/4 mile upstream from Columbiaville bridge.. Walk down to stockport creek.. used to fish stripers in 70>80's every night.. some bruiser linesiders & shad hit the freezer then.. now only fish for the schoolies in April on fly .. too crazy like salmon anymore .. I'm in the adk's by may :)

RE: Simple Stuff 2011/09/13 09:59:12 (permalink)
Ah yes the on-going debate, I remember being in a bar not far from the tribs and having a fun conversation with a bartender who called my friends and I snaggers because he also was under the premise that salmon don't actually bite.  Funny thing was the tribs we fished had some holes where you couldn't see a single fish yet we would run broken back rapalas and large skeen through the hole and catch them.  It wasn't til a trip with my pops to the salmon river that my perception changed SLIGHTLY.  My father had never been up and I decided to get a guide.  We both were very discouraged when the individual tried to teach the art of flossing.  I definately plan to re-visit the SR but will bring the fly rod that I just purchased as a result of all these conversations (getting back to fly fishing after 8 years) and use various streamers unless I think an egg pattern might work.  I think some of your examples of when you fish trout or any species can be easily applied to the SR, you either try to get them on something more natural and if they aren't interested maybe you move to something that could cause a reactionary strike.  However, if that doesn't work, you move on.  Sometimes, they simply aren't interested, what becomes the game changer in NY is the size of those fish.  There's a local stream not far from me where the sporting club stocks large breaders i.e. browns/rainbows to 24 inches and unfortunately a similar situation unfolds i.e. hook the fish by any means necessary.  I just shake my head and keep moving as even if they catch that fish.  Putting it on the wall in my eyes is a disgrace.  There's no story for when someone goes down to the man-cave and says that's an awesome fish how did you lcatch/land it.  Ultimately, its like you guys said, you have to try different things, see what works and if they aren't interested keep moving.  There's a lot of fish, so the chances you will **** one of them off is I think encouraging.  I always remembered a very simple rule to fly fishing, its all about the color and size.  Doesn't matter how pretty it is and it doesn't matter if it's perhaps the wrong hatch as long as it's close.

they absolutely will bite
i have realized over the years this debate will never end so i don't even try
however i have also realized over those years that once in a while i inadvertantly do floss a fish from time to time
much to the amazement of the 50 lb test bretheren, some of us do release fish when we didn't hook them fairly

i just love fishing for these fish, be it hos kings or steel

the tug is indeed the drug

They will hit if you FISH for them and treat them as WILD fish that just came in from spending their lives in a LARGE lake to spawn and die in a SMALL river.Don't wade in on top of them, get a drag free drift with as LITTLE weight as possible, keep changing flies/color until you find the ONE!
I'll see you all on SAT.
